Replacing flasher relay?

Dear Folks,
I am planning to equip my '91 FJ1200 with a hazard-light function.
For that i have to replace the flasher relay as i expect the original having too low capacity.

I have noticed it is a 4-pin relay?
I haven't seen this before..
Can i replace it with a 'normal' 3 of 2 pin relay?

Pat Conlon

I'm not sure about your '91 FJ but some FJ's have automatic turn signal shut off which uses a special flasher relay. This relay is connected to the odometer on the speedometer so after the odometer reads a set distance, it signals the flasher relay is shut off.

If you have auto shut off on your turn signals, then you have this type of relay.

If you want to lose this feature you can retrofit a modern digital relay.

I have not done this on my 2 FJ's, I like the auto shut off feature.

Perhaps other folks can chime in who have changed out their oem relay.

Arnaud,
I don't know the "91 electronics either, but if you have self-cancelling turn signals, I would leave all of that alone. If you brick the flasher unit, you may have problems getting things back to stock.
Being somewhat lazy, I would add four LED displays, each one on, under, or near one of the OEM turn signal assemblies. Connect all four LEDs together, powered from a standard LED flasher, with a handlebar (or panel) switch to turn them on and off. The advantages here are that the LEDs can be much brighter than the OEM turn signals, it's simple to install, and easy to fix if necessary. HTH.
My US$ .02 worth . . .
Cheers,

I think Red's idea has merit. Leave the oem flasher relay alone.
Add the aftermarket flasher relay and switch for the hazard light function but instead of adding additional LEDs I would try and use your existing flasher lights by using a pair of diodes to separate the hazard circuit from the turn signal circuit.

Arnaud,
Depending on the LEDs you can find, it may be possible to install a number of single LED bulbs in each of the OEM turn signal light fixtures, around the stock lamps. The stock flashers remain the same, and the LED flasher will light up the hazard-light LEDs.
Remember to use amber LEDs under the amber lenses.  White LEDs put out very little amber light, so they would appear to be dim with amber lenses.

Hey i didn't get a notification about the replies? I turned on the notification option.. strange..

I don not have or want LED's,

At my xj900f, 3 wires were coming form the indicator/turn switch, and made a hazard-light switch which is connected to each of them and it works!

The wiring diagram show 5 wires coming from this unit?

Pat Conlon

Do you have self cancelling turn signals?

No, Not any more? I got this bike about a year ago... I am not sure what has been altered before.
It has now a 2-pin flasher relay.

So, since i know this, i took apart the turning switch casing but was hesitant to pull apart the turn signal switch itself/use serious force on it.

The wiring diagram is not precise enough(?) so indicate WHICH 3 (?) wires are coming from the turn signal switch..

Does anyone have a clue or better information source?
