Got my new pod filters today.Do I run them dry ?,

uni pod filters require uni filter oil hand rubbed in very lightly.... no dunking !

be sure to clean the inner boot where they clamp onto the carbs with solvent or they won't stay on the carbs

And don't over tighten them. The rubber has been known to split. DAMHIK.... :dash2:

It looks like rain Sunday and my ported top end for the 99 GP1200 has not come back yet so Sunday I should be able to get the heat shield on the 85 FJ.
I might buy some oil and do a oil change too.

Bike has never run the way I want so I took a look in the carbs last night.Removing the screws was a bitch some had been stripped already.I found that the needles are not stock they have slots and shims.I think there was 6 slots and the clip was in the second one from the top.there was 2 washers one small and one bigger on top of the clip.Where do I set the needle hieght to clean up the low end.Right now she starts hard.If she does not start on the first few tries she drains the battery real quick and then I need a jump.Seems to start a bit easier with a jump.I do have a 2 new batteries lol.......

It all depends on whether your bike is rich or lean.  The needle position won't make a lot of difference for starting anyhow.  This is determined much more by your idle jets, and float height.

Have you thoroughly cleaned the carbs, including all the passages?
David Raforth (SlowOldGuy) sells a kit with every screw for the carbs replaced with socket head SS screws and a set of float jet O-rings and complete instructions on cleaning and base setting of your carbs.  Well worth getting a kit (its cheap too) from him.

Alternatively Randy (rpm@swaybar.com) can ultrasonically clean your carbs.  I don't know what he charges for this, but others have been very happy.

If you just want to do it all yourself and ask us questions along the way you'll still need to have everything clean and also provide all the sizes of  the jets and needles that are in your carbs.  While the stock US carb needles only had a single groove, the bikes sold outside the US had 5.  And DynoJet (and maybe Factory) needles also had a number of grooves.  Do you know (or suspect) that your bike may have had a carb kit installed sometime in the last 25years?

I suspect I am rich because if I add fuel using the choke symptoms get worse.If I blip the throttle it comes back to the same rpm but seems to come down slower than it should.It also sounds fat to me.
The person I bought it off was clueless and didnt know what was done to the bike he had about 15 psi tire pressure and only ran it around his neighbourhood.He didnt even title it.
I sent a email about the carb bolt kit too David Raforth but have not got a reply.I do have a couple of stainless steel cap screws I can use to replace the ones that were already striped.
I need to know what jets I should be running and what slot I should have the clips in  :scratch_one-s_head: I also need some pics of a home made carb sinc manometer so I can make one and can see how you hook it up.I have 4 pulse lines and the meter would have 4 vacum tubes but I am using 2 of the vacume lines off of the carb intake tubes.
I did see some residual build up on the needles which I removed.I want to try lowering or raising the needle today I just have not decided wht way to go.
Do I keep the 2 washers above the needle with the small spring or does the small washer fit above or bellow the needle ?

for some reason it seems aftermarket needles tend to put extra wear on the emulsion tubes which in turn will make it run real fat.
its worth giving them a close inspection for ovaling

I lowered the needles today and she ran better I also turned in the idle mixture screws (2 turns out) and synced the carbs by looking through the butterflys.
I found a pin hole in one of the Diaphragm's so will need to address that.
Ran her for about an hour with no issues
I lost one of the c clips for a jet needle and the guys at Arlington Motorsports gave me one no charge they have done me good on a few small items for good prices.Got my rear tire mounted there :good: They are just a few minuits away as well they get a recomendation from me.

Carbs have a Dynojet kit in them so I am going to try there setings with and without the stock/dyno pilot air jet.
I have reset the needles and the idle mix screws are 3.5 turns out.Working on starting issue and proper running issue ay the same time I dont think there related but could be.

In the kits I have installed on several bikes I have found that DJ tends to go a bit too rich on the main. Try 2 sizes down from the recommendation as a good starting point.
