I'm in Joliet. I'd be more than happy to accompany you to the DMV, but I'm out of town
this weekend; I'll be back next week. I used to live in Schaumburg (Village in the Park,
just northwest of the corner of Golf and Roselle) and I used to work in Wheeling, so I
know the area pretty well.

If you need anything, let me know. I've got workspace, a fairly extensive set of tools,
and a few spare parts. There aren't many FJs in the area...I've seen a few, but
apparently they aren't members here.

I am computer illiterate what can I say.

that sounds good.I should be fine with the dmv I will find one open on Saturday and go then unless I can find someone who could go during the day this week or tonight as some are open till 7 tonight.
I plan on at least going through my carbs after I go on this trip to see my daughter I have pod filters on there and don't know what jets etc are in there.
If it was my waverunner I would know the carbs on the bike I will figure it out as I go.
But back to the FJ would love to have you give me pointers.
I am waiting on a rear tire in the mail i found a place that will change it for me but I don't have a center stand so I need to figure that out too.
FJ seems like it needs some carb work to me.If it was my GP1200 I would try adjusting the low speed adjuster screws 3 44 mm Mikuni SBN carbs.
FJ has Mikunis but they look quite different.

Cant wait to get my licence and go see my daughter and the new baby its going to be an adventure.I did get a helmet yesterday for the trip.

Bike was not running on all 4 cylinders today after riding in the rain yesterday.I found a few things wrong.Dd not know I could turn the fuel off under the tank and did not know that I could disconect the throttle cable in the middle.My cable was binding causing my rpm to go up if I turn the bars tight.I rerouted it and will test it tomorrow.I found one of the tips inside one of the plug wires caps was stuck on the plug not in the cap.I also found that I need to get some NGK's the Champions in there were no Champions.I fixed the cap stuck the plugs back in made sure all the caps were tight put evrything back together andI did get it to run but not worth a crap.Pulled it apart again and found that the Fuel line had colapsed at the petcock.Clamped the old line and cut it so I could drain the tank and lift it away from the bike thats when I found out that reserve on the petcock is really off lol.Fuel line had been kinked and also had colapsed.I had a new piece of hoe so i put it in and hooked up the tank and put the gas back in.I also found out that I only have one cable on the throttle instead of two.I think I found the right routing for the throttle cable I need new plugs some clamps and a cable and I think she will run as good as she was a few days ago.i will be working on it early,I hope to have her running good so I can rent a motorcycle tailer to take her to the DMV for my test.

The '85 petcock has 2 positions: ON and PRIME.

ON only flows fuel when there is a vacuum present on the diaphragm, or if the shutoff o-ring is missing/bad.

PRIME flows fuel all the time. 

There is no Reserve.

i figured out that down was on and horizontal was primer i still dont know how the primer works its not what im used too.Been trying to get her running all day spent a few hours finding plugs.Cant get her to fire  mutch at all and I know my fuel line is good no kinks.
How do work the primer other than just turning it on ?
I could use a phone call with some advice fuel is stoping at the carbs not geting to the cylinders.

All you need to do is turn the petcock to "prime".

The "prime" position just bypasses the vacuum-operated diaphragm which controls the fuel flow in the "on" position. In other words, in the "prime" position fuel should flow freely through the petcock even in the absence of engine vacuum (like, not running). In the "on" position, engine vacuum opens the diaphragm and allows fuel to flow when the engine is running, but blocks fuel flow when the engine is off.

Start with the simple stuff. Pull the hose from the tank connection and see if you've got fuel flowing when it's at "prime". If no, suspect the petcock. If yes, reconnect the hose at the tank, disconnect it at the carb end, and again check for fuel flow.

Don't tear into the carbs until you verify that the fuel is actually getting there...

Still wont run.Pulled carbs because I couldnt get One of the drain screws out.
I think the battery might be suspect although it looks new.Was in the garage till 1:00 am.
I opened up the float bowl side and all was good inside I could see the N/S were not stuck closed,pulled acouple of jets out and nothing was clogged.
Reasembled evrything and tried to start her.She would fire ocasionally but only with the throtle closed all the way.
Going to try and work it out later today.

Ohmed out the spark plug caps I dont have a service manual yet so I dont know what they should ohmed out at.It looks like 2 of them are bad though.I lost one of the springs and the small long piece from one of them. :dash2:Going to look for some new caps tomorrow.

Good news shes running bad news I dont have time to get out to Elgin to take the test.

I am running 93 octane I read somewhere that she needs 91 or better is that right.
When i bought it i was told it only needed 87 octane.

What octane do I run in the fj ?
