Randy, I have a question for ya?? I have always wondered why the oem spark plug ends had resistance built into them? I have replaced the coils and wires on a few bikes and the replacement ignition wiring just had rubber boots on the end of the wires.. I have never ohmed out any of the wires but they dont look as they have any resistance in them?? Just wondering thanks in advance....

Well it has to due with radio frequency interference (RFI). My dad said back in the early fifties laws were passed to reduce the RFI coming from cars. He remembers being able to here a car approaching and leaving the area of his house by the whine in the TV from the ignition system. I googled RFI and it basically says the same thing.

One thing the FJ has is solid core wires which means the resistance must be done within the spark plug boot. When one changes over to the Dyna, Accel or similar system they install carbon core wires which provide the required resistance.

That is my 2 cents...someone else with better electrical expertise can probably can provide more information than I can.

I went to the nearest motorsport place I could find and they had some new end caps for the coil wires so I bought two of them.They were slightly diferent in that the tail section was longer but the screw was shorter.I will go back and get two more to match the two I bought.I ran her for at least 75 miles today she ran good but seems to be running rich to me.(no mph #s so far)Alan my friend who went riding with me on his 750 vulcan said he could smell gas when he was riding behind me.I need to address the throtle cable next she wants to rev up if I turn the bars to the right I did try re routing the one cable I have without success.I suspect if I had the second cable it might not want to do that so much.I will put it back to where it was originally I can see wear marks on the frame so It will go back there.That and I have my new GT501 that needs to get mounted on the rear.I missed getting to the dmv today by about 1/2 hour because I had to wait for the shop to open at 10:00 am so Monday its going on a trailer and im driving it to the dmv to take my test.
Do I need to run 91 octane or better im guessing yes so I am running 93.I will buy a manual in a few weeks when im not so broke thats usually the first tool I buy   :yes:

Thank you we have 87 89 and 93 at most pumps so I will run 93.I could mix 89 and 93 and get 91 if I wanted though.

Slightly off-topic, but there's a couple of rides this week that you and your buddy may be interested in since it sounds like the FJ is back in running condition.

Thursday night, the Chicagoland Dual Sport Riders meet for dinner. Location is a bit up in the air, but right now it looks like Hooters in Downers Grove or Fuddruckers in Schaumburg. 7:00 PM, maybe followed by a short ride. Nice guys. http://www.meetup.com/Chicagoland-Dual-Sport-Motorcycle-Club/

Sounds good but I hope to go out of town to see my daughter and her new baby this week so some time after that.Last night the bike wouldnt start the neutral light came on but no headlight and it would not crank.After playing with the sidestand switch all was good.Started this morning as well.
I find my throttle hand goes numb when riding at higher speeds I would like to have some really good paded grips and some decent gloves to soak up the vibrations.What would everyone sugest.Longer grips or extentions to make the bars longer would be good too I think.Also I am going to get new mirrors when i can afford some.There are a lot of little things I will be doing over time to make the fj better for now I just need that licence and im going to rack up some miles  :good:

Regular unleaded is fine.... the manual says to use 91RON or greater, in the US we grade fuel using (ron+mon)/2, RON is typically a higher #. I run 87 year round, in Tucson....  103F today. No problems, she never pings....

A few years ago, I worked on a Late Model stock car team...... the 1st couple times out, we had a major problem with the ignition crapping out on top end. It turned out to be the crappy carbon-core plug wires...... we put on a set of spiral-wound solid core wires and never had a problem with it again......
The Yamaha engineers chose to use good-quality steel-core wires with a resistive terminator in the cap. Same RFI-suppression, but no worry of the carbon-core crap breaking down at high RPMs.... and the Late Model was only turning ~7500-8000 RPM. The FJ will go to 10Grand....

I had a great trip I got lost on the way and had to wing it so I spent extra time in the seat.Next day she got rained on and wouldnt run.I had no spark at that time.Found water in the connectors by the coils checked some other contacts and she fired back up.My Daughter and her new baby boy were doing awesome so I stayed for 2 days then came home.Took 8 hours coming back and took 12 hours going  :crazy:
Hot and humid and I pushed her hard so I was having some trouble with the bike when I would slow down to ask directions.Gas was vaporising in the carbs because I am missing the heat shield between the carbs and cylinders.I can safely say she will run the claimed top speed on the spec sheet and a little more though.Somewhere on the return trip one of my rear signals mysteriously dissapeared I thought I had blown a bulb and was going to change it when I saw the turn signal was gone.My 1985 FJ1100 needs a lot of little things done I do have a few parts coming including the heat shield and some rear signals but she is sound enough to get me where I need to go.I also cleaned out the choke cable it was almost jammed so starting is easier and I installed a side stand switch.I had a pod filter come apart and taped it temporarilly so I have bought some new ones I am guessing they get oiled if so what oil and how do you aply it spray/dip ?.I ride my 85 every day it helps with stress,not so yesterday and today.I have never seen so many cops with people pulled over.I went for short rides and came back home.I will be replacing all the turn signals for led ones sometime soon but for now its going to be oem lights.
