I have a Loud Crackling sound when accelerating. Seems to come from the rear wheel.bearings are ok, no leakages and shifting ok. Chain( tension) and rearsprocket seem to be ok. What could that be? Thxs guys

If bike is parked in neutral and engine is idling and you rev it a little there is no crackling sound? That would at least confirm engine is ok.

I would put it on the center stand and give it a little throttle in each gear and see if you can hear anything. If that doesn't work have a friend ride it down your street, maybe not being on the bike helps pinpoint the sound.

How do you know the rear wheel bearings are ok? Rear wheel has two bearings in the wheel and one in the sprocket carrier. Did you pull the rear wheel off and check the spacers and everything?

Have you taken the front sprocket cover off to check the front sprocket? All the links in the chain good? Is your rear wheel perfectly straight or did it become cocked to one side causing the chain to not marry up to the sprocket? Do you know for certain the sprockets and chain are all 530? Or is this a bike you got from somebody and you know know the maintenance history?

thxs...interesting insights. I will give all these proposals a spin. And yes, my assumptions are bases on what I van see and hear. The bearings are checked by wiggling the wheel....

My suggestion would be to remove the rear wheel and check everything and likely just change the wheel bearings. Have you ever changed wheel bearings before?

How many miles are on your chain and sprockets?

These bearings should be what you need if your FJ is 1984-1990

The front sprocket is almost worn :shok: ...
Which chainset should I buy because I have 3CX framenumber 1988. But with ABS   imported in 1992...strenge isn't?

Get a top of the line chain for your FJ...

I'm a fan of 530 DID ZVMX...other folks like the EK ZZZ chains. As long as the chain's tensile strength is at least 10k psi you should be good.

Go up one tooth on your countershaft sprocket, from oem 17 tooth to 18 tooth. It's easier on your chain and better gas mileage.
38 tooth to 40 tooth are the popular sizes for back sprockets. Get steel sprockets, not aluminum, aluminum back sprockets do not last on our FJ's.

Thanks for reporting back, mystery solved!

Cheers

We have you covered regarding chain and sprockets. You'll just need to decide which sprockets sizes you want to use.

I'm runnning 18T front and 40T rear and like it.

I suggest ordering quality sprockets and chain from RPM don't be tempted to save a few bucks with cheap China eBay stuff.

That's not only strange, it's worrying- Yamaha didn't put ABS on any FJ anywhere until 1991.

Are you sure your FJ is both a 1988 and a 3CX model. It may have been modified by a previous owner, or it may be a matter later 3XW model (not sure why/how it would be registered as an 88).

Can you post some photos of the bike and the ABS equipment, it might help us get to the bottom of this conundrum.
