I have a short torso. My friends say I'm a chest with legs. My84 FJ screen seems to direct the wind blast right at my head causing a huge amount of buffeting. I read somewhere that 86 and newer had lower windscreens to get around this problem. Can I retro fit a later screen to my 84? Or just trim my present screen?

No, the 84/85 windscreens are different from the 86/87 because the fairings are different.
You can cut down your windscreen or look for the aftermarket screens that have a +2 or +4 inch extension.

I think Pat is right that you should try the taller screens. I have an 84 fj and an 86 fj . I find the fj1100 is more comfortable and does a better job of keeping the buffeting off my head.
I'm the opposite torso length though. I'm a little over six foot with 32 inch pant leg length .

there are two options.  I prefer to be completely above the turbulence so the Zero Gravity wind screen works for me on my '85.

I am 6'3" and on my '84 with the oem screen height the wind line was at my upper chest level. No big deal. I wear a neck gaiter for the wind noise.
15 years ago I tried the +4" windscreen but it moved the turbulence level to my visor, made the wind noise worse and buffeting on my helmet was tiresome on long trips.
I had a cracked oem windscreen I decided to do an experiment with...I cut off the top 10" were the crack was and cleaned up the top line of the screen.

Here's what it looks like:

This moves the wind line down to my mid chest area and the result is my helmet is in cleaner, quieter air.
The Rizoma mirrors also move the wind turbulence down and further outside of my torso vs. the oem Mickey Mouse ear mirrors.

I still have my oem height windscreen. I'm not sure I like how this short screen looks. Just not used to it.
However, for my height, it is a noticeable improvement in lower wind noise.

Cheers

My Helmet is just above turbulence, only problem with taller screens is that you don't get any cooler air.

Pat, I like that big chunky "heel" on your side stand, does the extra weight affect the stand staying put when in the "up" position ... like when your riding, doesn't bounce around?

What's it made of and how did you fix it on ?
I've been Thinking of a carbon fibre block underneath .

Hey Sparky, I have a write up over in the modification files.

The block is out of aluminum and the base plate steel. (The base plate is welded to the one foot pad)

No problem with the spring holding it up.

It is a bit tall, the bike stands up too much....I'm going to shave it down a bit.

Before you trim your windscreen you can remove it to see if you like the effect.  I did on my '84 and liked the free air so ended up trimming mine as seen.
