Hey,

I don't mean to be a pain in the rear end(but I will anyway. My brother and Dad will be starting a project soon on converting an 86 model FJ 1100 into a cafe racer on a budget too we hope. I have searched but what do you think is the best suspension and brake conversion to do?Sorry to ask but once I saw this sight I knew that is the best place to ask.

Thanks

Arnie

No pain here.
The '86 model FJ was a 1200, not an 1100.
Best suspension??? For Aussie public roads??  Either modified late model FJ forks with RT emulators or FZ1 forks.  If you want more external adjusters you could look at R1 or GSXR forks and re-spring and re-valve them to make up for the extra weight of the FJ.  All the Yam forks above will let you mount R1/R6 gold/blue spot monoblock brakes and they work pretty well.
If you got a BIG budget, then you may want to talk to Ohlins about just what you want in a fork, and then decide if you want Brembo or Nissin or Aisin or whatever brakes.
No matter what you decide, you'll have to set them up for the rider and bike's weight and riding style.

Cheers,
Arnie

THanks for much for the info. My stupid mistake though because I saw the bike today and was built 6 month 1984 sorry. Are these mods still able to be done on this 1984 bike.

Cheers

Yep.  Same same.

Which end of Oz are you in?  I'm down near the bottom near Geelong.

Well, not quite.  I just looked at weatherzone.com.au and its 3.5C here right now (1AM) and 13C up in Brissy.
There's a number of FJ'ers near you that are probably willing to give you some advice if you ask.

Cheers,
Arnie

Good morning mate......what's your name?

There are a number of us FJ owners here in southeastern Qld.
I'm on the Sunshine Coast along with Doug (the General). Richard (Rover) is down near Narangbah, Pete (Waricle) is in Ningi, Klavdy on the Gold Coast (but in US at the WCR rally at the moment).

Give a shout if we can assist.

Cheers

FJZ1 1200 - It'll do me just fine.
Timing has much to do with the success of a rain dance.
