Spin on oil filter adapter seepage concern

I think I found my little oil seepage.
Anyone offer a solution?
Did I possibly overtightened the filter?
Those dimples in the seal are from the adapter oil flow holes - I think I can tell that was seeping a weep bit of the ole oil -
Is there a different filter with a slightly larger sealing ring ID?

FJ1200W,

You may have purchased a too-small oil filter.  The seal should be on smooth metal of the adapter, not on any holes.

Some oil filters have changed lately.  The spin-on adapter fits the older depressed-center filters, but some oil filter makers have gone to a less recessed center hole.  These newer filters have been known to leak, or refuse to seal at all.  I would suggest that you get a list of "compatible" oil filters for the FJ.  Take the list to the store to find those filters which still have recessed center holes.  Put a straight-edge across the open base of any filters, and the differences will be obvious.

A second requirement would be an anti-drain "flapper" valve inside the filter, so the oil filter stays full of oil after shut-down.  Most oil filters will have this feature, but check anyway.  Without the anti-drain valve, the oil pump has to fill up the oil filter before the engine gets any oil, every time you start the engine.  This is NOT good for the engine bearings. I like WIX oil filters.
Cheers,
Red

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

Use a Wix 51334.

May I ask what brand and part number that is to ensure it is not a recommended filter

I used a Hi Flo HF 303

I had a few of these. I'll pick up a WIX later, I prefer the extra oil capacity of the larger diameter
I'm not sure why I switched to these little ones - maybe ease of access?
So far no new leaks or seeps detected, no worries.

Thanks, I'll have to confirm the hiflo fitment.

I believe my adapter is the older 8 port version.

(I still think it may have been overtightened, squeezing the gasket out.)

It's also a good idea to swipe a thin film of oil on the filter's o-ring before installation.  I figure most folks know this already but just in case.
