I've just acquired fj1200 with R1 back end what chain and sprockets would I need any help would be appreciated thanks

Hello and welcome...
 Your back sprocket all depends on the rear rim.
Do you have the R-1 rim or did the PO (previous owner) use a different back rim with the R-1 swing arm?

Take a picture, show us what you have...

Your chain size can be either be the oem 530 size or possibly a 525...I think I recall the R-1's used a 525, prolly a 110 link.

Ok, you have a R-1 back rim, so you know the sprocket bolt pattern,  do you see a special offset sprocket?

Stock FJ Sprocket tooth count: front 17, back 40 to 42
Upgrade sprockets: front 18, back 38-40. Check the hub on the R-1 rim to make sure a smaller sprocket will fit.

Count your chain links. Do you have 110?
Chain size difference between a 525 and 530 is small and you need to measure the distance between the inner plates of the chain to see what size you have.
Disregard the red highlighted box on the image below...it was a Google cut and paste.
Look at the 525/530 lines.

Very likely that you will need an offset countershaft sprocket.  I have used 1/4" offset but it required a spacer shim behind it as it wasn't offset enough (spacer was 1.6mm).  I finally found a German seller on Ebay with 8mm Offset sprockets for FJ1200.  This works without a spacer for me....  I am using a 2007 R1 swingarm and wheel.

Finding offset sprockets became much more difficult when PBI Sprockets closed up shop.  If you locate what you need buy 2...

Here is the sprocket I found...  I forgot to mention that the Honda CBX1000 takes the same sprocket as our FJ's...  Widen your search to include Honda CBX1000 as any countershaft sprocket for that bike will drop right onto the FJ drive!

Thats what I used on my gsxr600 rear wheel. I couldn't remember what it was until you said that. Thanks. I will be needing to replace one this year. I need to write that down.

If I remember right I had to have the front of them machined out to get it mounted. Was too thick or not enough room for the nut with the built-in offset on the back.

Hmmm  mine went on fine but as I recall it was a bit thick and the new lock washer I had was too thick to use - had to reuse the older one I had that was thinner.  It was in good shape so I didn't think twice about reusing...  that feedback for the manufacturer should be given though.  He produces these in batches and I am sure he could accommodate taking a few thousands off the inside surface for a perfect fit.
