FJ1200W,

I do not know if your year is built in the same way as my 1985 FJ1100, but for my bike, the inside of the oil pan looks like the picture below.
The thick boss gives a good threaded grip for the drain plug.
The cutout in one side of the boss allows complete drainage of the old oil.
If the new valve screws in higher than the inside bottom of the oil pan, the threaded part of the valve will prevent all of the oil (and débris) from draining.
This issue may or may not be a consideration for you, but it made me decide to skip the valve.

Cheers,
Red

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

Good feedback, thank you.

I'm running one of those headers that requires removal to change the oil.

The fumoto or the cooler line -

Always just pull the frickin' header.....

FJ1200W,

Yeah, same type of headers here.  I do believe that the drain valve will keep the dirtiest old oil from being drained.
I use a flat ratchet wrench, not a socket wrench, to remove and replace the drain plug.  I do not remove the headers; I just disconnect the glasspack muffler from the pipe, loosen (NOT remove) the header nuts, and tilt the headers down enough to get the drain plug out. I can do that with no need to replace the exhaust gaskets at the head. For any oil that gets on the headers, I just wipe that away with a shop cloth and solvent (gasoline works).  YMMV.

My common sense must have just upped and left -
Thanks for the reminder of the method.
Fred suggested the oil cooler line for a drain. I need to look closer at that, he's usually spot on.

This ^^^ left side oil line...(as the bike leans to the left on its side stand)  Buy a handful of o rings to replace the old rings as the years go by...
