Front Engine mounts....question

I took the mounts apart to clean them, as I had heard of the sleeve siezing to the outer bushing, causing engine vibration issues(I seem to have some. not excessive though)
However my 1990 doesn't seem to have this type of engine mounts......
The one on the right is a rubber star bushing, and the one on the left is a big solid aluminum bushing.......

I cleaned it up with the wire wheel on my bench grinder....
I am wondering why one mount would be a solid block of aluminum? Shouldn't it be rubber to help dampen some of the engine vibration......I am guessing this is the source of the vibration I feel through the frame.
I'll put it back together the way I found it, however I'm miffed. :unknown:

I did mine (1989 version) this past weekend also, to find out the exact same thing.  :dash2:  I even got the special tool made up to remove them.  Ah well.
Do not argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Ok stupid question, can you retrofit 90 and older with newer rubber mounts?  Kevin. :scratch_one-s_head:

The quick and short answer is no.  The frame rails are completely different allowing for the rubber mounting.  That being said - the engine cases are the same.  So if you are REALLY crafty with a welder it is possible.  Probably the easiest way would be to get the lower frame rails from a 91+ FJ and "section" the mounting points into the 89 frame rails.  Still - it would not be easy.

If your 90 FJ is in good condition and the carbs well synced - you shouldn't feel the need anyway.  I have an 89 (same as your 90) and a 92 FJ in my garage - side by side for comparison if you would like some corroborating pics...

Dood, stop worrying about "stupid questions"! Nobody here will disparage or berate you for asking (nearly) any question you may have, even if it's been addressed a thousand times.

Oh, and welcome. :)

Allright I will refrain from using that term.  Force of habbit!  I was just wondering, not that I had issue with the vibration in mine.  Coming from dirt bikes the big four bangers seem pretty smooth to me.  I guess it's just what ever your used to. I have never in my life so far ridden a Harley but have ridden some of the big bore v twins/cruiser style bikes offered by the Japs and don't understand the attraction and talk about vibration!  I guess that's  why they make so many flavors of ice cream.  What ever works!  Kevin.

Most of those guys that "like" the vibes, it's because they have problems pleasing their woman otherwise.....
