Oil leak from an aluminum stopper

My Yamaha xt 550 started leaking around the right side cover. I thought it was a nick in the case from my nephew crashing the bike several years ago when he was learning to ride but it was coming from what looks like an aluminum wine bottle cork.
I was wondering if anyone is familiar with a plug like that. There is no plug shown on the parts break downs . It lines up with an oil passage so I am assuming the passage was drilled and then plugged in the manufacturing process.

My solution at this point is good old JB weld. I confirmed the knick in the case above the plug was working but I filled it anyway.

Doesn't look like an FJ to me...

Maybe that plug was a shouldered plug like on the FJ and the crash ground the shoulder part away...  the o-ring seal would be in that shoulder if that's the type plug that was in there.

It's half an FJ Frank .
The plug was still under factory paint so nothing was ground off. I think it is a tapered plug . It's wasn't quite flush with the side case. I think the impact above it may have distorted the case a little and pushed the plug out. I was tempted to tap it back in but I decided if the JB weld doesn't hold I could try that later. So far so good though. It appears to have been leaking a long time by the amount of oil and dirt collected in the bash plate.

It would be interesting to take the cover off and look inside. I wonder if it's a locating pin or index pin of some sort? Then why wouldn't they cast it?
That JB Weld goop is amazing stuff. Good prep work Travis. That patch will still be around long after we're gone....
Sand those bumps smooth and spray some satin black and Bob's your uncle.

Ian found a manual on line. It pretty well confirms the plug is at the bottom of the oil passage up to the filter. It was a solid casting then drilled out from the outside and plugged.
I took it for a ride tonight and no leakage.
