Seen a lot of owners get sandbagged by a special skill called soldering.  Yes, it is a skill that takes some practice, but a lack of good tooling can yield poor results, also.
Done a lot of aircraft work in my time, and they actually had classes at work to teach us how to get it right. 
It ain't rocket science, but some things are needed or helpful which may not be obvious.
