Clutch Pushrod Oil Seal Popping Out

I replaced the clutch pushrod oil seal and now it pops out when the engine is started, dumping all the oil on the road.

It looks like the housing where the oil seal fits in has been damaged at the back so that the oil pressure forces it out.

It looks like the damage was there a while but the previous seal held without any problems.

Has anybody encountered this before?

I'm wondering if there is a safe way of using an adhesive to hold the seal in without the risk of it dumping the engine contents on my back tire.

In order of likely causes based on what you've said, first would be the wrong seal, after all, the last one held OK. Scratching up the housing with a chisel or centre punch is actually standard practice for a seal that doesn't fit tight enough so it's unlikely to be caused by the damage you can see. The crankcase is ventilated by other means offering a pathway of much less resistance, assuming that's not blocked there wouldn't be enough pressure to blow the seal out.

Think about it logically, the old seal didn't blow out and the new one does and nothing else has changed, what does that suggest?

I use Loctite 641 for seals and bearings but I really don't think that's your problem, I've never heard of this before (on an FJ).

Where did the seal come from?

That's funny....Crankcase venting is not the issue. The oil pressure on the clutch push rod is considerable as anyone can attest who has started their engine without the clutch slave installed.....
Just ask my cat.....

Did you use a genuine Yamaha seal?

So you're saying the seal is subject to oil pressure and this forces it out. How does the seal come to have oil pressure bearing on it?

The information you seek regarding the pressurized oil at the seal can be easily found in the GYSM...

Mick, snap a photo of the housing with the seal and shaft removed. I can advise if there is damage.

Thanks Randy, I don't have a manual but I know what you're referring to and that wasn't the information I was after on this occasion.

Noel, I don't understand your confusion....
The oil pressure on the clutch push rod seal comes from the oil pump...not from pressure in the crankcase.

Do you agree with this?  If so, why do you even mention crankcase pressure?

The standards of modesty differ form country to country. I think the USA is a bit behind on what the public can/should see. But pulling the wool off too soon would be a shock to the culture norms. So the big question still remains....
