When fitting new cams I was told to fit new shims.....I couldn't get the shims I wanted from Yamaha (I did get 8 shims from RPM) but the others I had in my collection from a local supplier...... After 500km I re-checked the shims and to my dismay I found the 8 RPM shims in perfect condition but the others were starting to score. I checked the cam surface under a strong magnifier and no visible damage. I have photos of these, it appears they only harden the non number face.
After 20K km the cams are still perfect (I checked yesterday) but I'll think twice about using other manufacturers unless really desperate (and number side to the bucket). Unfortunately here in Oz getting OEM shims is hard and expensive.

There are not only plenty of sellers in Aus but manufacturers as well and Yamaha, Honda and Triumph all use the same shims, so there's plenty of OEM supply out there if that's your preference. However, I've never seen evidence that suggests OEM are any better than reputable third party items, not that vehicle manufacturers make their own anyway.

If I need shims I get them from this mob....

Sorry to hear of your bad experience Bozo but in the interest of putting the right info out there, I think it may well be the exception rather than the rule, there's nothing wrong with aftermarket shims, yours is the first I've heard of such a thing.

What brought about the need for new cams anyway?

Thanks for the feedback, I'll have to PM you to let you know the manufacturer of my shims (if possible I'll supply photos). I fitted WEB cams to my FJ. RPM supplied these for me.
First major bike in my life was a Mach III widow maker.
My Second permanent bike 1978 Z1R (owned since Dec 1977)
My Third permanent bike is the 89 FJ12 - nice and fast
Forth bike 89 FJ12 my totally standard workhorse
81 GPZ1100 hybrid - what a bike, built to sell but I can't part with it

Bozo, I'm with Noel.

I use those guys as well.

Below is a pic of a shim set I bought from them as well as a shim set I've combined that I bought from RPM.

I'm more than happy to swap shims, I was going to use this as a base for the Oz chapter as a starter shim library & offer it at this years rally.

I've many half sizes as well.

The entire box is full and the baggie ones are sizes that won't fit (need a bigger box).

Let me know what you need and I'll send them over.
