starter dragging

 Did a search and can't find anything mentioning this.
The bike turns over slow compared to my wing and when it's hot it turns over even slower.
At first I blamed the fact it had been sitting for a year and the battery is probably on it's way out but to date the battery hasn't died.
That has me thinking it may be a starter issue.
any known issues with the starter or wiring to it?

A corroded battery cable/terminal will act exactly like a weak battery. 
All battery cable ends should be bright metal connecting to bright metal.
Every battery cable has two ends.
The auto parts stores will have small "wire toothbrushes" to help get the cable ends clean.

Any smart battery charger (Battery Tender, et c.) will have an automatic de-sulfating cycle during operation. 
These things will keep your battery healthy for a long time. 
Old-style dumb chargers do not do that.

tks red. The cable ends on the battery are corrosion free but I haven't looked at the other ends yet. I figured I would check here first to see if there is a known issue.
My battery charger is fairly new and it's only 2 amp. I don't believe in fast charging a battery. Had to many returned when I worked in the parts dept at our Canadian tire. We got the batteries dry and had to fill and charge them.
I would try and convince the customer to leave the battery there over night so I could trickle charge it but most wouldn't.
This was back in the late 80's when battery chargers sent all the power from the grid thru the battery it seemed. lol

The original starters are 2 brush units. And when hot does not crank as well. Others have changed them out to 4 brush units. They report back with improved cranking even when the engine is hot.  On my 86' I found that cracking open the throttle about an 1/8 of a turn makes hot starts easier. Others have also reported improved starting  when switching over to a Li battery. So if your battery is at or near end of life, consider an upgrade. They are smaller and lighter but pack a much bigger punch when you hit the starter button.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

tks for the tip on the throttle.
I'll keep the battery upgrade in mind. I have an agm battery in my gl1100 and it's been amazing. I'll check it once a month in the winter and it will be almost spring before it needs to be charged up.

I have a shoria battery in the fj1350r. That's atleast 8 years old. And when I first got it. I somehow left the parking lights. (Turned the key past off?) Didn't realize it had such a thing. All night when I was at a motel.  Got up and it was flat dead. Push started it. And been running it ever since. Never was the same after that. But was still way stronger than regular batteries. Well it  finally gave up. On the trip to the smokies. Has been  idle for  years at a time  also. With no maintenance.  I think  that's about as good as it gets.

For what it's worth, my '89 despises hot restarts. Cold starts it turns over at a normal pace, however. Typically I leave a battery tender on it while parked in the garage for peace of mind.
I think most people can also speak to the stock starter not appreciating hot restarts.
+1 for Li battery.

I have found that a google search of a FJ problem always displays forum discussion from here on the topic you are looking for. Most recently my no start issue was covered in 2019 even by the same contributor as my problem unfortunately the new member with this problem never said if his problem was resolved.

I've experienced a running issue before that acted like an ignition issue - turned out to be a battery issue.  It wasn't dead yet, but it wasn't quite right either.  If you can have the battery load tested it would be good to have the results.
