My late wife had a hip replacement prior to which, she took up regular cycling which made a huge difference in her recovery. Two nights in hospital and she was up and walking without assistance.

My late wife had a hip replacement prior to which, she took up regular cycling which made a huge difference in her recovery. Two nights in hospital and she was up and walking without assistance.

I usually cycle 3,000-5,000 miles a year, but this year I've done less than 500 so far, I just can't pedal with my left leg.

On the FJ, it also means I have to use my right foot to hold the bike up when I stop. A couple of friends noticed this and asked why I made it so difficult for myself when stopping/starting on hills etc. They didn't realise I find it hard to get my left leg on and off the footpeg, without using my hand to help lift my leg.

The doc reckons I'll be out of the hospital in 3 days and that proper recovery back to "normal" will take about 6 months. I'll be pedalling as soon as I possibly can

Dean, I would have thought riding on left side of the road, you'd favour your right foot down anyway (with the camber)

The camber isn't normally enough to make a difference, but doing low speed turns and manoeuvres I usually prefer to keep my right foot on the peg to use the back brake. I think my friends are the same, because they only notice it in situations where everyone else puts their left leg down and I put my right. It's mostly on junctions when pulling away uphill and making an immediate turn.

I'd not really noticed i did it, but one my regular riding pals is a IAM instructor and when riding behind a few of us they noticed I was the odd one out (although I'm likely odd for a number of other reasons  ).

I would ask the medics about Covid vaccination, if you have not had that done yet; this might be a good time, while you wait for the hospital. 

Not sure what the medics may have in mind for you there, but once the skin is healed, a warm-water pool can get you going, long before you could walk otherwise.  The water supports you, and the warmth relaxes you.  A cool pool will NOT do the job, and may hurt you if you tighten up your muscles against the cold.  The local medics should know where the warm water lives, near you.  You need to be able to stand up, in shoulder-deep warm water.  Always bring a buddy, in the pool.

No worries there Red, being both over 60 and on prescribed medication, i was at the front of the vaccination queue - got my first early Feb and my second mid May (second was delayed 2 weeks because of a steroid injection in my hip to kill the pain, which didn't work, hence the replacement).

85% of adults here have already had both jabs  

We have a couple of good pools nearby - our youngest has a neurological disorder which means he needs a wheelchair to get around, but he does weekly physiotherapy sessions (one in water) to try to bring back some mobility - we know his therapists and the local facilities very well as a result.

One of the few redeeming things about living where we do, is the availability of great medical and rehab facilities. When we're healthy e can't wait to get out into the countryside away from it all, but when we're ill Or incapacitated we're happy our home is near to a lot of major towns/cities.
