Bicycle steering basket ..

Yesterday i was in a shop and found a bicycle steering basket   i will use it on the FJ but not for luggage or as a helmet i be back with more later..

Here is the reason why i bought the basket.My old oilcooler has done its job and the fins are banged up badly so i got another oilcooler that is in good condition
i wanted to make a protector so the fins don't get smashed.
First attempt was to use the frames on the basket ,but that did not turn out nice because the frames and mesh is not straight.I then made another just cutting out from the mesh and that was better.I will just use steelwire in the corners to hold it in place.Also made another protector from finer mesh ,but i think that will restrict the airflow to much ?
Also thinking about using the finer mesh inside the airscoops to prevent small stones entering the sparkplug area i have many times
had to remove small stones before pulling out the sparkplugs so they don't fall into the cylinders .

Looks good. With the condition of your old cooler I can see now why you wouldn't use the carrier for your dog. The poor thing would be sandblasted. I just had my thirty-six  year old cooler off a few weeks ago and it had no bent fins or even dead bugs stuck in it. You guys must have gravely roads over there

I think the damage to the oilcoolerfins is a combination of very high milage hard bugs stones a little bird and some gravel roads .An example of the high milage is
that i had to replace all 3 brake calipers because the holes where the securing pins for the brakepads sits had become oval shaped and the pins was worn thinner
where the pads hang on them.I have replaced almost every serviceable part on the bike except the oilcooler and bodywork.
Before the wheels was painted they had glue residue from balance weights all way around the rim.
Before the bodywork was repainted the red colored parts of the paint
looked sandblasted and had a pink and white faded color. I almost regret that i repainted it because it was cool with that worn out patina.

Some of the FJR guys get wire mesh waste baskets from Office Depot and make radiator guards.

when i bought the bike in 2016 the odometer was at 115000 ,but that can not be right as how the bike looked. I got it cheep so i bought it anyway since the best thing i know is wrenching . when i started restoring the bike i found many signs that it must have run at least 211500 or maybe 311500.The worn out brakecaliper securing pinholes, sandblasted front fairing and fender ,all the glue residue marks from balanceweights all around the rims .The shiftshaft had deep groves from the oilseals (see pick) same deep groves was on the spacers on rearwheel from the grease seals.It takes allot of kilometers to make that =) The enginecovers was dark grey no paint left and had a million of marks in them from stones .

The gastank where the knees goes was so worn that you got soaked with gasoline on innside of the knees when riding (the last one was a joke =)
In comparison many years ago i owned a FJ 1100 for about 6 years that had almost 80000km on odometer. when i sold it it looked almost new with minimal wear.
i have only done about 25000km on this bike so the bike has rolled 236500km or 336500km  the fj600 on my profile picture also had high milage but did not show any big signs of wear it was a nice bike until i crashed it into a drunkdriver pulling out in front of me then it was not nice anymore =)
