rear end chain rub

first time owner of an fj1200 91 3xw, came previously modified with thunderace 17 inch rear wheel, however the chain is rubbing the tyre and the rim itself isnt true with the brace, if i put the rim true there is no way you would ride it as chain right against tyre, i have stripped everything to check modification and all seems in place, the offset front sprocket is there and the rear sprocket carrier has been milled down and spacers in place etc so im stumped as to why its rubbing and wont run true, with so many differing guides online is there a definative guide some say not to mill sprocket carrier at all??

   Whats the tyre size? A 190-17 will probably rub the chain and a 180-17 Dunlop have also been known to be wider than other brand tyres of the same size.
A bit more information might be helpful.

This is what I believe is the definitive guide to the Thunderace rear into FJ conversion. Marc Rittner is very skilled and had a superb FJ.

There must be an issue somewhere in your conversion - my 170/60 17  tyre on a Thundercat wheel is "miles" away from the chain on my FJ.

only thing i can thik of is the sprocket carrier has been machined to much have a second one on way and will machine it to specs and compare

Not all tires branded as the same size, are the same size. I had a Dunlop 180 rear touch the chain and a Continental 180 clear it. Same tire size, different width.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Just checking Declan - you do have the Thunderace swinging arm in as well ??

Have you checked everything against Marc Rittners dimensions? I didn't think anything changed during the short model run of the Thunderace (I think it was only 2 years, possibly 3) so I'd be surprised if the carrier dimensions changed.

Something's wrong. You should have plenty of chain clearance with a 170 tire, regardless of manufacturer.

Something's wrong. You should have plenty of chain clearance with a 170 tire, regardless of manufacturer.
