Hi Gadget here , AKA Dave, I have had my 87 FJ 1200 for 6 years and am from down under where if its not under water its burning . The old girl is still running well but its time to do something with the front forks and brakes. The forks are leaking again and I am looking at putting later  fj forks and R1 calipers on . This of course means changing to 17 in front wheel . The forks that are on there have progressive springs in and heavier oil , the rear shock is not original and I have always been happy with the way she corners. Changing the front to 17 in seems to open up a whole can of worms. Do I stay with 16 in back wheel or change that as well , and if so what width to get best availability of rubber.Let me say hear that I don't need anything special Just comfortable reliable  but a bit of fun riding, which is why I have the FJ in the first place.Any one that has had an older model and been through the same decisions  please help clear my cluttered mind .Thanks lads and lady,s looking forward to your coments and maybe meeting some of you one day  Dave

Dave - Gadget,

GSXR Rear 17" wheels of 4.5 to 5.5 in wide are very easy to fit.  The 4.5 will take a 160 or 170, the 5.5 takes a 180.  I think the 160 works fine, others want that wiiiiddddeee look. You'll want to get the whole wheel assembly including sprocket carrier, brake, brake carrier, and torque arm either way.  With the 5.5" wheels you may have to space the countershaft sprocket out a bit to get proper chain alignment.  The 180x55 tires are probably the most popular current rear radial around but there is no problem finding your choice of 160x60 rear radials either.

Whichever choice you make, its well worth it.

Cheers,
Arnie

Dave, get off the fence and dive in. Yes change the rear to a 17" along with the front. there are several ways to go.
you will be happy you did.
