Best service/shop manual?

Better late than never, I've finally bought myself an FJ (a low-mileage 1985), and am in search of a good service manual. Which is best (Clymer, Haynes, other?) and where is a good source to get one? Thanks!

Don't bother with anything other than a GYSM (Genuine Yamaha Service Manual). The others have errors and less information.

I agree on the FSM, if you can find one.  They cost ~US$100 (+/- 10) from a Yamaha dealer, if still available there.  I can't give you a good source, otherwise.  If you buy a used book on-line, make sure that you will be getting the real book, and not just a pirated CD copy (worth less than a buck).  The CDs are mostly illegal scanned copies, which means that you can not Search for any individual word in the book, even when you are looking right at that word.  Yamaha has never released digital copies of the FSM, although their dealers may have them, but not for sale.

Some errors in the genuine manual too if memory serves correct (measurement specs). The OEM manual is the best but that FJ manual is very poor compared to Honda (especially), Suzuki and Kawasaki manuals of that era. The Yamaha manual doesn't even state main and con clearances, bore diameters or bearing thicknesses. It is better than the Cylmer or Haynes as those have all the years packed into one book (gets confusing) instead of a main book with additional model supplements.

I have it on very good authority that the 1100 manual is supported in this manual as well.

Thanks, Robert, but a note at the bottom of the seller's ad says this manual "does NOT COVER FJ 1100 1200 (L-D). It is a SUPPLEMENTARY service manual FJ1200AD FJ1200ADC"

I thought it looked kinda skinny.

Hi, Pat! Are the manuals, that are for sale in this link, copies of the original Yamaha Full Service Manual? I was going to buy a Clymers manual out of habit, but if $15 bucks can get me the full service manual on a CD, I'd opt for that instead!

Hi Gabe, yes, that is my understanding, you get a full Genuine Yamaha Factory Service Manual on CD.
I think I ordered this CD over 20 years ago....To be honest I didn't use it much.

I'm a bit of a Luddite as I like books, rather than a computer screen and keyboard.
You would not believe the shit I get from my wife when I get grease on the keyboard....
Friggin end of the world....such drama....yea, I like books and manuals better.

Oh neat, I think I may use it as a temporary solution until I decide to cough up the money for a physical copy! I actually work in the Software industry, so it's very natural feeling to use a computer to read documents and things of that kind. However, I very much prefer to hold a physical book in my hand as well! Especially if its a manual that I'm try to read off of, because much like your wife, my girlfriend is always hollering at me if she sees me out in the garage with my computer out and a pair of mechanic gloves on, haha! That aside, thanks for the input!

I'm a book guy too.  The old carpenter's thing about measure twice and cut once...I read twice before doing anything complicated.  I put post-it tabs on all the frequently used pages to save thumbing through the index.

When I buy a used bike always ask the owner for any manuals he has...after all, whats he going to need them for?
