The 1984-1987 models use a scissor type of linkage to connect the shock to the swing arm. The lower end of the shock has a single bearing for mounting. The 1988-1996 models use a relay arm and dog bone style linkage. The lower end of the shock has a clevis style mount.

The 3CV shock has a frame mounted remote adjuster via a chain. The 3YA/3XW shock does not.

The 3YA/3XW shock can be installed on a 3CV. The chain will need to be removed and the remote adjuster then becomes unusable. Also, the 3YA shock will need to be shimmed with washers for the mounting points.

My suggestion is to purchase a NEW aftermarket shock. Even the budget aftermarket shocks are better than the OEM shocks when they were new. There are a few places around the world that can and will rebuild your OEM shock, but for just a bit more cost you can have a better shock. IMO, rebuilding an OEM FJ1100/1200 shock is like polishing a turd. Once you get the OEM shock back from being rebuilt, it looks great and is nice and shiny, but it is still a turd.

i,m not bothered about the chain adjuster just whether it will fit.
cheers

new shock would cost what i payed for the bike.

Millietant

I agree totally with Fred, Dirk. I junked my standard 3CV shock about 11 years ago Dirk - splashed out on a Hagon, I think they're about £300 (maybe less) these days, from the UK FJOC and they're worth every single penny !!

If you bought a running FJ 1200 for less than that, then I'd say spending the money on the shock means the bike is still a massive bargain !!

'89 FJ 1200 3CV - owned from new.
'89 FJ 1200 3CV - no engine, tank, seat....parts bike for the future.
'88 FJ 1200 3CV - complete runner 2024 resto project
'88 FJ 1200 3CV - became a race bike, no longer with us.
'86 FJ 1200 1TX - sold to my boss to finance the '89 3CV I still own.

Replacing the FJ's oem shock is #1 on my mod list. It is the most expensive** but worth every penny.

Do not gamble of buying a clapped out used oem shock. That's like buying used fork springs.
If you want to gamble, buy a good quality used aftermarket shock like a Penske, Hagon, Ohlins ...at least you can rebuild those.
