There is a saying common in aviation .... "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are no old bold pilots"

Much the same could be said for bold riders with a cavalier approach to known hazards, such as wildlife. It is unpredictable and I have encountered many who have not read the rules or chose not to abide by them, appearing in places and at times where and when they simply shouldn't. A wise rider will at least observe what is known of their behaviour. It's no guarantee but it improves the odds.

The "protective shield of youth" has faded, the invisible force field that once allowed me to fang through the night at warp speed deluding myself that if some animal jumped in front of me I'd simply employ my lightning quick reflexes and take evasive action, simple. Of course that was young me, in hindsight, old me wonders how I ever managed to survive being young long enough to become old.

If caught after dusk or at night in roo country, which seems to happen more often than it should, I ride at 50 kmh, no matter how far I still have to go. Even this is no guarantee I won't hit one (as Troy said, they even run into the side of you) it just means it probably won't kill me and the bike has a better chance of still being rideable.

This is shot I took inside turn 2 at Philip Island MotoGP a couple of years ago. This was only a few minutes before the race started.

   It was all   ""To Easy""
Now it takes me at least  10 min to get all my Bike Protection  Gear on  ,just to go about 2 miles down the road to the shop to get a loaf of Bread ,,

That is a great offer Phil, thank you. That would be absolutley perfect, apart from getting the trailer back to you, don't think I could do the trip there and back twice in my allotted days off. But that is an option, I will see what I can do, just waiting for my neighbour to get home who said a few weeks back he has a mate with a bike trailer etc. I did find a fellow here who hires out his bike trailer for $30 per day, so will weigh it all up.

I did search for one way bike trailer hire in Nowra etc, could not find any.  Will see you at the Manshed Phil hopefully,

No problems there Phil, you'll just have to buy another bike that's in a Barn in Qld...

At least you won't have to tow the trailer uphill.

Ray, have you considered driving down with Alena and riding it back in convoy.

Or as I did, fly back the following weekend and ride it home. Flights are only a bit over $100.

Just a thought.

From memory there will be no Rego on the 1100 Noel, and it will stay in the shed for probably 1 year while I do some cosmetic tidying up on the engine etc. ( will be discussing this with you over a red or two I'm sure).  We have taken 2 weeks leave and will just swag it on the way down and back like we did in Walcha, will be a nice road trip

Apply for a UVP, https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-unregistered-vehicle-permit

Then you could take it for a spin  :good:

I'm a big user of those. Since number plate scanning technology became standard on most police vehicles I have been done a number of times for driving an unregistered vehicle at $770 a pop. On each occasion it was not my vehicle.
Yet another example of why the insurance should be on our driver's licence, not on the vehicle. I can only drive one vehicle at a time and I'm not aware of any vehicle ever taking itself out for a drive.

Grumble, grumble......

Good on you Ray, it's reassuring to know there are folks out there who know life isn't always a race and still know how to be laid back and smell the roses, enjoy the trip.

I hate the way insurance is a scam these days Noel, but I'd guess its because if you were insured as the rider/driver, the insurer would have to base your risk and premium on the bikes/cars you would likely ride/drive - the premium would be a lot lower for say a Ford Fiesta, than a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, or a FJ1200 than a V4 Panigale (as would, in their opinion, be the risk). How would the insurer be able to set an appropriate premium without knowing which vehicles you were going to ride/drive? - and if you had an accident on one they hadn't included for in their risk assessment, surely they would tell you that any insurance would be invalidated because of that?. Their backstop would be to always assume you're going to be riding the highest risk bike possible and base your premium on that - then they are covered and so are you....but at a huge cost!

Over here, our normal standard vehicle insurance also cover fire damage and loss due to theft as well as vehicle damage and 3rd party claims (you can buy 3rd Party only insurance, but its usually not worth the premium saving unless you have a pretty worthless bike), so they have to know the bike to be able to cover it. Insurance here is nearly always based on both the vehicle AND the rider/driver. It's also a rider/driver's responsibility in law to ensure that both they and the vehicle they are riding/driving, are properly insured. For most riders, their own bike insurance will cover them as a rider for 3rd party claims if they are riding a different bike to the one they have insured, but only if that bike is covered by separate insurance as well by it's owner/insurer.

If I let someone else ride my bike and they have an accident, unless they have full coverage for any bike they ride, they're only covered for 3rd Party claimants, and as the owner of the bike, I'm not a 3rd Party - so if they trash my bike, I only have friendship/honesty/trust, or a civil claim for damages to get my bike repaired/replaced.

There used to be such things as "Rider Policies" over here, where a rider could have a policy giving full coverage for any bike the were riding, but these were phased out in the 1980's - eventually they assumed that anyone wanting a Rider Policy was going to want to ride the biggest, fastest, most expensive bike they could find (without having to buy it) and so the put their premiums up to cover that eventuality/risk - pretty soon, nobody wanted Rider Policies any more.

In my family, my wife, my son and myself are named as secondary riders on any of our bikes that we expect to ride (because of his age, our son is only insured to ride his Fazer 600 and Liz's CRF 230, but Liz and I are named on the insurance of all of our bikes) - and we have multi-vehicle policies for our cars with named primary & additional drivers for each car.

It doesn't pay to risk a prosecution for not having appropriate insurance here - once that happens, you're screwed for future insurance for ANY vehicle (sky-high premiums intended to prevent you from being able to get insurance and hence be a risk again).

Noel s referring to "Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Personal Insurance" (Green Slip Insurance)
This covers injury to Other Persons Only, not property.
I have two 1200cc motorcycles which cost me approx AU$700 / Year for Green Slip Insurance and a Station Wagon at approx AU$550 / Year.
So, my chances of injuring "Another Person" (third party) is higher riding my motorcycle than while driving my Station Wagon!
A 1000cc Honda Fire Blade or a GSXR 1000 are cheaper for Green Slip Insurance than my FJ1200. So is a 1600cc Harley.
Statistics prove that motorcycles around 1200cc account for more injuries to other persons than any other capacity.
That's what my insurance company told me.
Some insurance companies can charge well over AU$900 / Year for CTP insurance on a 1200cc bike.

It's this CTP insurance which should be attached to the Drivers / Riders Licence.
Even at the most expensive, I would sooner pay AU$900 / Year then AU$1950.
