Ultimate 1000 mile ride

A number of FJ owners have completed an Iron Butt Association Saddle Sore 1000. A few others do 4000, 8000, 15,000 mile trips.
Here is a twist. 1000 miles without stopping or putting a foot on the ground.

If anyone could do it Fred, it would be you.  I say convert your luggage into fuel tanks.  Use your aviation knowledge and make fuel bladders with aircraft resealable tank material.

That truly was a marathon ride.  Jeez, ten hours in the saddle.

And here I was thinking I rode for a long time to get to RPM. That was 14 hours, but with a lot of stops    Thats nothing compared to these boys, or you Fred. Not even CLOSE!

I know folks get their enjoyment from riding for all sorts of reasons, but to me this is not motorcycling as God intended, it's devoid of everything I enjoy about riding. Sort of like seeing how long I could stand on one leg, or hold my hand over a lit candle......

Perhaps with a nod to that other great 1000 mile Italian motoring event, it could be called the "Mille Masochista Miglia"

Iron Butt rides are not popular here, might have something to do with the Kangaroos, there is nowhere here you would want to ride from just before sundown until a while after sunup.
Sorry Fred, I know you love these events and I have previously congratulated you on your own well deserved achievements but it's just not for me.

BTW, the Kwaka has American flag mounted to the back, it's in every shot, how come in this one it's blowing forward.



...could it be a 50th anniversary Moon flag? (for those too young to remember, the flag appeared to stand out straight like it would in the wind, there was no wind) then there was the foot prints that didn't match their boots and identical earth photos before they became the moons surface........so many tantalising theories.

It was noted in the article that the barn door fairing on the Concours was very effective at creating the dead air space that sucked the flag forward. I'd appreciate a vent or 2 in that windshield.....especially in Texas.

I have to agree with Noel on ironbutts. In 1971 I had to ride from San Antonio, TX  to Waterloo, Ia to report for induction into the armed forces the next day. 11oo miles total. I was nineteen years old, in the best shape of my life and it was not fun at all.

This years ironbutt was won by a woman who rode over 1200 miles on a Yamaha FJR the most reliable bike built. Sorry all you BMW riders but Yamaha knows how to manufacture final drives.

With the flag blowing the wrong way there is 3 possibilities.

(1) They had to ride so slow to get the pic the wind was blowing faster than they were going.

(2) They were riding so fast the wind comes over the windshield and curves onto the riders back as tall windshields do.

(3) Riding in Texas the wind always blows from behind you. One of the benefits of riding in Texas.
