I have tried numerous ways of derusting my gas tank. Apple cider vinegar, toilet bowl cleaner. They worked to some extent but still left rust. So after some research I tried Evapo Rust 2 gallons. It's expensive at $26 a gallon but WOW it works. I turned the tank every 30 mins for 4 hours. After 4 hours I drained the Evapo Rust into a container as it can be re used. It's rubber , paint , plastic friendly also environmentally friendly. Flushed the tank twice with water and dried the inside with air and paper towels. Then filled tank with gas then drained it to make sure all the waterways out. All the rust has been removed from what I can see. This stuff works extremely well and can be done with petcock and fuel sender unit still installed. First picture was after treated with apple cider others are after Evapo Rust.

Vinegar is a slow process.  It might have taken weeks or a month depending on the severity of your rust.
