I don't use a dedicated GPS unit, but I do have a mount for my phone. I just run Google Maps while riding in areas that are strange to me. For the mount, I have a Ram X-grip mounted to the steering stem acorn nut. It works very well.

+1 on the RAM mounts. I keep a couple of the ball mounts, in different configurations, on the FJ, the WeeStrom, and in my truck. Solid and versatile as hell.

I don't like mounting stuff on the bike. I google map my routes and destinations prior to the trip, and enjoy the ride. Phone is tethered to a usb charging port routed into my tank bag. If I get lost, I pull over and check the phone. I can also use the google map navigator audio to give verbal directions in my Sena.

+1 on Fred's setup.

Drill 1/4" hole in the triple clamp nut, insert 1" RAM ball and mount the GPS to that and done.  I prefer Paper maps and don't use the GPS much, but it's nice to have for gas-station hunting in unfamiliar areas.  But that wasn't your question...

You can see it poking up in front of my tank bag in this shot:

Yea, amazing what a ride around a parking lot will do!

you'll also need this: https://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-HOL-GA34U
and a double ended socket like this 3" : https://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-B-201U

The arms come in different lengths so you could go shorter or longer, depends on your preference or if you have a tank-bag in the way.

A word of caution. iPhones in particular have very sensitive batteries, and will swell when left out in direct sunlight. I don't know about other gadgets, but I would advise against mounting a smart phone exposed to sunlight.
