Here's a pop quiz...

A NASCAR fan and a Harley rider gets into a fight....Who wins?

I think we ALL win!   :good2:

Ding Ding Ding...The Monkey gets the win by 44 seconds over the Fluff King.

Have we throughly pissed off Brook yet?   I wonder what kind of oil they use in NASCAR?

I'll watch NASCAR.  It figures, because I'll watch any sort of racing and NASCAR is the kind that is on t.v. all the time where I live.  I'm not that discerning, though, and if you get two of my neighbors cutting their grass at the same time, I'll pull up a chair and pick one of them and root for him to finish before the other one.

I personally always liked open-wheel and sports cars, preferably on a road course if the t.v. coverage was good.  Then about 10 years ago, a good friend bought a retired Busch Cup car http://www.cardomain.com/ride/246732/8 to go vintage racing with, and I helped restore it and run it for a couple years.  Consequently, I started to pay more attention to the current NASCAR series.  It's a giant ball of fun, just like any racing is, and it's more fun to participate than it is to watch (like plenty of other things) but it makes for good t.v.

It's easy to dismiss NASCAR in general because their rules have resulted in a bunch of cars that are sort of a bizarre offshoot of "what American sedans would have been like if the 1970's had gone differently."  And it's easy to dismiss the big ovals because the cars are hamstrung to keep them from lapping at 240 mph and failing spectacularly and tragically.  But like almost anything (even lame-ass arena rock) it's more compelling when you go see it happen live, and it's more compelling when it has become familiar.  ("And I can't fight this feeling anymore....  I've forgotten what I started fighting for....")

NASCAR at Talladega might look boring as hell if you watch it on t.v. and don't know who is doing what or why they're doing it.  But let me tell you, I went with friends 3 years ago, and it was a fricken HOOT to go sit in the grandstands and feel the roar of 140,000 people coming to their feet to cheer Dale Junior when he takes the lead.  It helped to know that this wasn't because Junior was that promising lately, but rather because most of them cheered for his dad 10 years ago and now Junior is the closest thing they have.  And better still, you should have heard the sarcastically-polite applause everyone gave Jacques Villeneuve when he droned by in last place, the same sort of "oh, good for you, you're doing so well just to be out there!" applause you give the slow kid during the school play.  Because if NASCAR fans appreciate anyone, it's a guy who has won the Formula 1 championship and the Indy car championship and the Indy 500 and has released an album of his own music and is not just Canadian but every NASCAR fan's favorite kind of Canadian, a FRENCH-Canadian.

(Actually, I think Jacques Villeneuve and Dale Junior have a lot in common.)

I'm equally enthusiastic about dirt bikes, and oddly ambivalent about guns.

Real men go straight.

Go NHRA! The total power output of a NASCAR engine is equal to only 1 cylinder of a top fuel dragster.

Very classy finish with a P51D, my favorite of that era. Very cool, thanks.
