Why did they decide to not put speed on the HUD? If as they say it is set up for nav the speed could change to red for example and let you know you're over the posted limit (just sayin)

Noel, the focal point for the bike HUD is planned at 1.6m, so I'm guessing they're allowing for blind people like me  :sarcastic:.

I don't really care about speed.  I'm usually more aware of that.  It would be nice to have GPS displayed, with the connection to all the phone functions.  Only thing it needs is an intercom.  Its a PITA to connect up all this stuff separately, so having one stop shopping would be nice.  Only odd thing is the battery is carried on the rider, not the helmet. So that's one external connection.  I'll just have to wait long enough until it hits the close out page on motorcyclegear.com.

Yes, I'm a Luddite, I still like my paper maps...<snip>

Same here. Extensive notes, Google Maps print-outs, and detailed paper maps of every state I'll be passing through. The GPS is for letting me know where I am right now, not for telling me how to get there.

I hear ya Rock.... I also appreciate GPS for finding me the closest gas station when traveling thru BFE.
Although, there were times when I needed fuel and I had no cell coverage.....

...out come the paper maps.....

Have you considered scanning the Google map print-outs and the paper maps into your phone?

Pat, are you talking cell phone or GPS? GPS does not need cell coverage, and how the hell do you find current fuel stations on a paper map?

Hi Noel, to use the Mapquest or Googlemaps app on my iPhone, I need a cell signal.
I don't own a sat phone $$$.

A paper map and compass will at least get me headed towards civilization. Although a few times I have made it to town, arrived on fumes with the only station in town closed for the night.

Lesson learned (you would think)

Noel, I know it's hot down there, are you staying hydrated? Not staying out too long in the sun?
The purpose of the notes is that they are easier (for me) to read than looking down at the screen on my iPhone.

Actually, at least with Android, you can download the Google map over the area you need before your trip. It stays in your phone for about a month.
I recommend that even if you are going to stay inside cell coverage the whole trip. It saves on roaming data charges plus you will always know where you are.

Having paper maps at least as a backup is essential. Electronics can fail on you at any time.

Thanks Kjell, I didn't know that (Luddite) Please help me understand how my cell phone knows my location on the down loaded map when there is no cell signal....

Pat, Don't need a sat phone, just a real one, just set your phone to use GPS only to aquire your location.
Or get a GPS unit.

And it has been hot and humid down here, just had a dust storm go through from Canberra heading via Sydney to Queensland and seen on the sat phone.

Sorry Pat, the "scanning into phone....." comment was a light hearted dig at Rossi, I forgot to delete your quote from his.

Pat, we are not talking about sat phones or cell phones, the discussion was about GPS units.

My understanding is phones have partial GPS capabilities in them, usually limited to just that, identifying your position. Using google maps within cell coverage uses a mixture of GPS and ground based systems. It is likely, as happened with cameras, that in the very near future phones will have the same cababilities as dedicated GPS units, but no yet.

I'm even more of a Luddite when it comes to smart phones. I use mine for making phone calls, and very little else. It's not a camera, it's not a Web browser, it's not a GPS.

I'll try...  pretty much any smart phone has a solid state GPS chip included along with a 3-axis accelerometer to enable electronic Dead Reckoning which calculates where you are based on where you've traveled since the last position "fix" via GPS.  Even if you don't download a map to follow before heading into a dead cell coverage zone, your position dot will continue to move along although you'll see the map information and then even your intended path (the blue line) disappear.  If you did download the map, you'll stay accurate to within the GPS limits until you lose GPS...  then DR will take over and you're position accuracy on the map will get worse over time due to cumulative errors producing a circle inside which you could be anywhere.  That circle becomes the size of GPS accuracy again when you get your next fix based on the satellites.  In the odd case of cell signal with no GPS, some phones can also self locate based on multiple cell tower signals and a form of triangulation.

Helpful?

Frank

PS - if you want to see this whole scenario play out in real life, drive from Tahoe CA to Redmond OR via the eastern route through Susanville.  I did that several times in the past few months and got to see the map go away, the line go away, then the dot get to be a bigger circle when GPS was not available (that happens more than I thought it would, probably due to limited sensitivity of the phone's GPS chip).

PSS - for Noel:  there are already GPS apps for the phone that use the GPS and Accelerometer chips only...  no cell signal required.  Welcome to the near future.
There's plenty of time for sleep in the grave...
