Oil Temp Gauge

Hey all, so I've recently started to enjoy the idea of having an oil temp gauge, and a volt meter. I was screwed out of another bike I was looking to buy, so its time to start looking at fixing/upgrading this one again.  I know they aren't necessary, but I like them, and think it would give me peace of mind when sitting in Phoenix summer stand still traffic. A volt meter is super easy to install, but I'm having trouble understanding how to install a oil temp gauge. I tried reading this thread here (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=2838.0), and a few others. I get the gist, but I don't understand where to put the sender unit. Randy mentioned putting it in a galley plug a few times, but i have no idea what that means.

Any advice?

Ryan, don't spend any more money on your bike, unless it's to find an engine for it.

Besides, sitting in traffic on a toasty summer day in Phoenix and seeing your oil temp spike to 300*F is not going to give you peace of mind. It will just unnecessarily freak you out.

I kinda thought that would be Pat's opinion after reading his thoughts on oil temp in another thread.  I wasn't aware that Ryan's engine was toast.  All that riding for the RPM Rally on a questionable engine?

Travis, I saw that ad too.
Ryan, there's a number of appealing looking FJ's currently for sale in NorCal.  Maybe you should let us find one for you?

Yea, we found out at RPM. Ryan has a cracked engine case at the upper rear support point.

Didn't stop Ryan 'thou... Just add oil and go....(as long as it stays off the back tire)

Yea, he needs another FJ. I've got my eyes peeled here in SoCal.

I would love to be able to find another, but with a slim of a budget as I have right now, it's difficult. I can save up for a few months, but who knows? And I hate to say it, but I'm not as big of a fan of the 1200's (sorry  :shok:), and 1100's are slim pickings.  As for dropping in another engine, I thought about it, but decided it wouldn't be smart unless I could find someone compentant enough to straighten the frame. The way I figure it, I've been riding this for a year and a half, and know how to deal with it, so what's a while longer?

That's a real bummer and more kudos to Ryan for riding that machine back some 800 miles.

There's one up the road from me in Santa Rosa for $1500.  I put it in FJ's for sale.  Just for grins the other night, used the computer to switch CL locations and found FJ's for sale all over NorCal and even Oregon.

if its an fj1100 you want there is an 84 in Carson City, twenty miles from me that has forty two thousand miles on it .from a distance it looks in good shape but its sat and at the least has gummed up carburetors.they have been asking 1695 for quite a while. i was thinking about offering them 1200 for a parts bike .but it deserves better than that.its yellow with yamaha stripes but the fairing looks pretty good.it has a kerker header and one sided exhaust.

That's a little distance for me, but I might look into it... $1,200-1,500 is my price range

If I get my clutch finished in the morning I might go and look at that 84 in Carson. I might offer him the twelve hundred.I like to take my well running highly modified 980.00 bike to compare to their needs to be worked on bike when I go looking.I don't tell them how much Ive spent since. If it looks good and I get it you could probably talk me out of it later if not I could always use a spare.

In this photo, there is an Oil Temp Sending Unit installed where the RED circle is. There is an Oil Galley Plug there. You purchase the Galley adaptor from RPM and the Oil sending unit screws right in. Attach the wire and route it up to your gauge.

+1 on that.
