I am wanting to change 2 cable set up on my 89 for throttle. I am wanting one cable ... How do I do this? I can safety the open throttle scenario but only want one cable.  Help?

Why do you want to make this change? I see the second cable as a safety feature. A stuck throttle with a single cable is way more fun than I want.

Mark, Tim wants to use his new controls: http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=17573.0
His new throttle has only provisions for a single pull cable.

Tim, your '89 uses a cable splitter box.
A Nice feature IMHO, something the '91-93's don't have, and it sure makes carb R/R a snap.
If you can't get your Yamaha oem pull cable to work with your new throttle...and you really, really, really want to use your new throttle....you can get a new pull cable made for you by Motion Pro.

Simply disconnect the push cable at the splitter box and remove the section of push cable that runs between the splitter box and throttle. Leave the push cable between the box and carbs alone. Seal the opening in the cable splitter box.

Can you take the electric guts out of your new throttle and use them in your oem push/pull throttle?

Yes Pat ... That is where I think I am headed.  Thanks for the suggestion. I modded the new throttle and tapping threads tomorrow.  If no luck I think I will change the switch out.  Sorry I got testy but I am just a tired grumpy ol fook.  My apologies Orangutan ...

No worries Tim, I forgot that you are pioneering alternate controls. I look forward to seeing what you end up doing. It is nice to have another option for these old bikes.

Mark, thanks for being so forgiving.  Being a horse's patoot is not at all my general character but for some reason I was just that with you yesterday.  I humbly apologize to you and our gang here for my stupidity.
The control may work if I can beef the "new hole" for cable 2 to a healthier standard.  I will likely use the older control but maybe the new will work with some engineering.  Hoping it will be easy enough so these controls are at least somewhat of a viable options.  A member on here somewhere once stated that the "cockpit" and controls should be pleasingly pristine since it is under your nose and in your field of vision constantly while you enjoy the torque of an FJ.  That made sense to me.

If these do not work, I will concentrate on learning how to restore the old controls properly to meet aesthetic as well as functional expectations.  The case on these new controls is of course plastic, and at the price I bought it is expected.  One note thus far, the plugs do not match but a new plug is easy enough ... especially with the schematics we have on the bike.  Note - no schematics are included with these controls.  I am tracing wires to determine function, but even that is easy enough.

So, the first round is on me whenever we might meet at a meet ... etc.   :drinks:

Another option may be a throttle from another bike that uses a separate throttle assembly and switch heat.  Some of the Yamaha YZF's are that way I think.  Also the FJr's.

I'm thinking that a single cable setup might require a stronger return spring.  Would be quite tiring to hold open on a long ride.

Isn't the standard spring all that returns it now (or should!), the return cable being just a fail safe?

Could this be a possible solution paired with a 3XW on/off switch assembly?

Time to let the throttle thing go.  I am going to used the old assembly which is in fine condition.  I will spruce both controls up.  The left side I bought would work well but right side is a no go.  The throttle "wheel" cavity is too narrow and not practical to attempt to modify.  I just hate faded red and blue switches (the heat method did nothing for it).

Tim, a common method for colored plastics is dyed nylon. Nylon is hydroscopic so it will take a dye. Try leaving one of the buttons in a red dye solution over night. It might freshen it up.

If you abandon the RH unit then I would love to have a look at it. I like to solve these kind of problems. And I have a spare bike to test it on.

I would gladly send you left and right to get your ideas, efforts, opinion(s).  Yours to keep if you pay postage to CA from VA ... yes, I am frugal (read that as squeaky cheap).  I have too many irons on flame to put time into this any longer.  Spring is too close and this wonderful bike is my only motorcycle as I am one of the few 60 year olds around with 4 and 5 year old boys who get most of my time and money (as it should be).  If you want them, PM your address, etc and I'll box em up in the next few days or so.  Thanks for that offer.
