FZ1 rear swing arm mod

Looking for some help.....snowy is almost done but we're having some minor issues.  The chain is having some clearance problems. I'm not sure if it's the front sprocket and or the collector box.....
but there is some contact. Can anyone tell me what front sprocket should be used. If memory serves me correctly..CanD has and Honda front sprocket with a wider shoulder.....which works great.....but CanD has the thunderace swing arm and snowy has the 02 FZ1 swingarm.....any and all input would be greatly appreciated. Not sure I understand where the rub is occurring.   On my 89 I removed the sound damping pieces from inside the countershaft Sprocket due to rubbing with the Honda sprocket.   

On my 84 I had a rub on the inside of the frame.  If I recall correctly, it was how the threaded bosses for the foot peg mounts were welded in place.  Mine took a little massaging with a file to clean up that area.  Some bikes will have interference there, some won't.   I think Frank Moore (racerman24710) had the same issue on Brutus when he did the "first" FZ1 swap.

Hey Chris...thx for the help.....I talked with Fankie at length as my Mods were moddled after reading what he did to his FJ on the FJ Mods UK site some while back......he was saying that there was quite a few issues and a labor of love in store to get it perfect.......problem is...I have the love and therefor the patients but don't have the experience or the tools to do it on my own........which is why I took Snowy to the same guy (buddy now) who modded CanD ....the issues he's having are nothing he had with CanD and I mistakenly lead him to believe this was going to be a cake walk........ the Thunderace swing arm was perfect and went together smoother than silk.......Frankie told me yesterday, he would rather have gone with the T-ace but wasn't able to locate one at the time. When I read his write up on the site in the UK, I was positive his write up made it sound simple......however the site no longer has his mod accessible to read and Frankie lost all his data in an 05 computer crash....I've also gone with a newer model collector box, which I was told by Robert (at RPM) was canted a little differently than the 84 and 5......I have put my feelers out for an 84 or 85 collector box.....There won't be any riding either CanD or Snowy this year.... so there is absolutely no rush any more and I am confident the finish line is just around the bend. My buddy asked me to do some inquiring and I am glad I did.....now I can give him the full picture along with the info he needs. Thanks Chrispy  :drinks:

I guess I need to pull all of my pictures, notes and scribblings together and do a full write up on what I did to fit up the FZ1 swingarm. I know that there will be many that will have grave concerns about welding on an aluminum swingarm, but I don't see a way to do it without welding that will get the linkage geometry anywhere near correct.
I didn't have any chain clearance issues, but remember that I'm running a 170 wide rear tire.

Just a question to the collective......am I correct in recalling that a 3CV relay arm will bolt up to the lower frame mount on a 1TX? I've never owned or worked on a 84/85.

Without looking up the different model designations, I have a relay arm from the '89/90 FJ on my '84.
I needed to convert over to the dogbone suspension to be able to fit the YZF1000 Thunder Ace swinger.

The '91/93 relay arms will not work, because of the offset shock. The '89/90 shock is centered.

Hey Pat....seems we've had this conversation before.......about 8 years ago??  :biggrin: anyway.....as of today.....I have pulled the plug on this swingarm......I don't have the time and my mod guy hasn't got the patients......therefore I got on ebay and grabbed a really nice 97 T-ACE Swingarm delivered for 100 CAN Dollars....and that's with all the bells and whistles......this will solve everything and since my mod guy has already done CanD.....this will save him some major stress and me some doe along with my friendship. I probably should have spent more time with research.....Snowy would have seen some tarmac this past riding season....oh well....we live and we learn....some quicker than others......Thx to everyone for all your input and honesty......helped immensely

 I have two FZ1 modded FJ's. The  R1 sprocket will bolt onto the FJ in order to allow sprockets to line up. Randy sells these. However , the sprocket rubs on the inside of the countershaft cover. Randy sells XJR countershaft covers , longer clutch pushrod and shift shafts. They are all 8mm longer to allow clearance for the sprocket. The cover needs to be cut to fit. It will not clear the FJ frame. It will allow standard FJ linkage with longer wishbones. If you have any other questions I should be abe to help if anyone wants CanD's setup.

Hey Johnny......I can't tell you how much I appreciate your input........I  would love nothing more than to grab Snowy and show up at your awesome mod pad and become Luke Skywalker....but the process involved in going from A to B may overwhelm a relationship that doesn't yet exist.  My  only option that resolves every issue....both professionally and personally is the thunder ace swing mod.......it is my best play right now. I  am very grateful for your input and will thank you for your offer.....but Snowy and CanD appear destined to be blood sisters.... :drinks:   Kev
