I want to buy an 2nd FJ. The one I can get for an give away price has me confused. The guy say it is an 1200,but the cosmetics and hangers looks like the 1100.
Can one say by the engine number what FJ it is. This is the foto of number on engine.

Thanks
Hannes

Its a bit of a mix up that one. Motor looks to be 1200 (3XW is 1200), but everything else is 1100. Fairing with small air ducts is 1100, as is the grab rail at the back of the seat.

Thanks,I thought so when I try to search for the first 1200's but all of them shows the big air scoops on fairing.

It should have a plaque under the frame just above the oil cooler. It should tell you exactly what it is/was.
84/85 is 1100.  86 to 95 is 1200

Thanks for that info Mark, didn't knew that there is an plaque on the FJ's.

But ja,I think it is an 1100 with 1200 engine that this guy  want to sell.
He states that bike is not running, rats chewed the wiring according to him.
Rather think it is because of 1100's electronics on the 1200 engine that the bike doesn't want to run.
On other hand,I can be wrong about the electronics

Based on the fact he painted the engine purple -  :bad: - (let alone the rest of the bike) couldn't you get it for free?  If the rat story is true, make sure you are armed before you open the air box!  My brother had squirrels make a meal out of his Stratoliner a few years ago.  They ate through the wiring for the fuel injectors, then started on the gas line before they got a face full of it.

Is this for parts or are you looking at a resto project?

Agree on the paint scheme,it is quite sickening to paint engine purple.
I want to use it as spares should I come in need sometime, but 1100 parts won't actually work as I have an 1992 FJ 1200 ABS.
Come to think of it,there are just a few things that I will be able to use.

That was what I wanted to know, cause it looked like an 1100 body. I just wasn't sure.
Thanks for the input

I use single pack automotive clear. When was the last time your saw a modern car with stone chips all over the front, like in the old days. Another option is polyurethane clear, it's "soft" and doesn't chip. I have used this on various bits on the bike. The underslung rear caliper for example cops a beating with stuff thrown up by the front wheel. It has a few dents where it's been hit but no chips. It's been years since I painted that. I like shiny stuff but buck at having to polish to keep it that way. The exhausts are the exception and I don't do those by hand.

This engine was one of about 1900 made in 1991.

Was originally an ABS model.

I'm not sure of the dealer agency importing into SA, could have been McCulloch as almost all of this production run show as going to the US, but there are two other regions this production run was exported from Japan to. McCulloch (the chainsaw mob) had the distribution rights to Australia, US and a few other places, so bikes marked as US might not have always gone to the US as McCulloch sent some to Oz, NZ, Fiji etc.

Long story short, that number is absolutely a 1200.

Given the 'Frankenbike' look from the photos the inside of the engine might be just as interesting.

As the 91 and 84 wiring is quite different I imagine both rats and some purple haze butchery are culprits.

The good news AJ, is the bike is all FJ, & these beautiful beasts can be resurrected, generally with a bit of common sense (yes I know, you can't teach common sense), local motorcycle wrecker, and this forum (plus a blasting booth for the paint stripper).

Just close your eyes, don't look at recipts and keep throwing the money at it. Make it something special, then your significant other will have to let you keep it.
