Hi, newer here.  I have a 85 fj1100 that has a bad gas tank.  Found an86 tank thats local and in very good shape.  My question is will it fit on my 85 without mods ?  It has what looks like a vent line on the rear of the tank and another connector on the bottom of tank across from the petcock.  I,m so scared I,ll buy it and it,ll be a anightmare to make it work, thanks.

You are on the right track. A 1986 FJ1200 fuel tank will fit and work WITHOUT any modifications. If your 85 FJ1100 has the OEM paint. The paint on the 86 FJ1200 fuel tank will match perfectly.

Thanks, was just worried about the petcock and vent hole s being off

The 84/85 tanks used a regular vacuum operated petcock, the 86/87 tanks also used a vacuum operated petcock but they also had an electric solenoid in the petcock for the (wonky) reserve function. The petcocks are interchangeable you can fit your 84/85 petcock on the later 86/87 tanks.
I suggest buying a new 84/85 petcock from RPM while they are still available.

I already did, the original one just fell apart when I took it off the bike, thanks again.

If you can find the part numbers on both tanks (usually a sticker on the underside), compare them. If the part numbers are identical, it's a strong indication of compatibility.

The tanks are different - gas cap specifically.  But as posted earlier in this thread - en easy and effective swap.

While all year FJ tanks can physically fit all year FJ's, the big difference to remember is that the later model 1988 thru 1995 FJ's used a fuel pump, so those tanks can not fit the vacuum operated petcock used on the 1984 thru 1987 FJ's.

However, you can use the late model FJ tank on your early model FJ if you find a manual petcock to fit (getting access to turn it on/off is another challenge) or if you convert your early FJ over to a fuel pump.
I like running a fuel pump because you can then use a real fuel filter, keeping the crap out of your carbs.
Alas, our tanks are not getting any younger....
