Kerker slip-ons: Refurbishing

I picked up a set of Kerker slip-ons a while back for use on my 89:

Supposedly came off an 89. When they showed up, sure enough, the can's had the 89-90 Kerker emissions and 80 DBA  sticker on them.

Today I started to refurbish them for eventual use on my bike.

First was to get the Kerker plate off the cans. Simple enough, they're only held on by a couple aluminum pop rivets. 1/8 inch drill and they're off.

Then, separate the cans from the pipes, someone had a car muffler clamp on one of them:

Thankfully, it hadn't crushed the aluminum like they do on a steel pipe:

The other one had a T-clamp on it and this one will get one also when it goes back together.

Then out with the end cap/baffle screws:

and out comes the baffle:

That's not unrolled, that's burned out.I'll have to re-wrap it with new when I put the can back together. The Kerkers are essentially "glass packs". Straight through when you look down them. Just a perforated pipe and a fiberglass mat. Well, this was more like a straight pipe as most of the holes were closed up with carbon. That's something else I will have to pick and afternoon and do: poking all the holes open again with a pick.

A couple minutes on the buffing wheel with some rouge:

Looks like they will clean up nicely. A little more work on the can and end cap:

That's where I left it for today. Looks like it won't take a lot of work to get them back into fighting shape. The pipe part of the slip-ons I'm not worried about. Just a little clean up and a shot with some high heat satin black and they're good to go.

I'll post more as I get it done.

Seriously? Dude, what the heck? You must be really bored or something.

I was going to say that it's probably hiding a big window that would show you how beautiful Nova Scotia is and distract you from the exhaust story.
