Noel, remind us, what suspension do you currently have on your FJ?

RPM front fork goodies and a gas shock.

Noel

Now this fits I was sure you mentioned the same suspension components i.e front & rear RPM, and here I am trying to work out why the rear on yours is different.

Please read my previous comment again, did I mention gravel rods or just rough roads, its obvious the BMW is better on dirt roads with corrugations I won't argue there.
I'm sorry I started this post.
First major bike in my life was a Mach III widow maker.
My Second permanent bike 1978 Z1R (owned since Dec 1977)
My Third permanent bike is the 89 FJ12 - nice and fast
Forth bike 89 FJ12 my totally standard workhorse
81 GPZ1100 hybrid - what a bike, built to sell but I can't part with it

....convinced me to change the rear tyre to a 17" GSX750, yesterday it arrived. To my amazement it was (approx) 600mm dia with a 150/60 x 17" tyre. My FJ 16" has 650mm dia.....

Bozo, something doesn't seem right there. It has always been generally accepted, that the OD of the 16" with the taller standard tyre is much the same as a 17" with a 180/55, which is what I run, and I would imagine was the most commonly fitted size. 50mm is a huge difference.
From memory, the gap between the wheel and ground barely changed when I swapped, certainly not a significant amount or enough to affect anything.

....and he still commented that he was blown by the way my bike rides over rough roads.

I travelled the corrugated gravel roads between Wilpena Pound and Arkaroola mostly at 80 - 100 kph and at times hitting 160 on the dirt, the suspension was great.

The Kwaka looks like a lot of fun.

Check tyre sizes here on the link below. Remember I stated "AN APPROX" (please read again) 600mm on the 150/60 x 17 (611.8mm - quoted on web with NEW tyre, mine was 60% worn) so 600mm is not bad.
My 150/80 x 16 was quoted at 650mm APPROX (646mm 0n web) so my ROUGH measurements were pretty good.

Noel, sorry I got a bit heated about this discussion. I take your/ everyone's points on board. I'll let you know how my 17" conversion goes, if its as good as Arnie and Pete say it is, I can't wait.

Thanks to everyone for participating , now we can concentrate on how Trump will affect Australia.

Probably less good for Australia than for America, which is fine, since it's been the other way around for some time.

Just because this is kind of a confusing statement by Noel.

Unless Noel changed over to the stock Yamaha shock or a different aftermarket shock, he is also using the RPM shock in combination with the RPM fork valves.
