Hi,
Looking for a 1986 FJ1200 Fuel tank. Just got call from dealer servicing the bike. They said the tank is all rusted inside. I found lots of related parts on the web, but no tanks. Anyone have a possible lead for this? If not, is it possible to remove the rust inside and make the original tank functional?
Thanks!

Get it cleaned (rust removed) and coated. It will be easier to repair it than find a good tank. Others have had good results from http://www.por15.com/
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Hi FJMonkey,

A friend of mine also said there was a rust coating/sealer that might work. I'll see about moparman70's tank first.
Thank you for the info and link. I'll keep this handy in case. Thanks for the quick reply!

Brad,

There are several fuel tank lining kits on the market. The product known as Kreem. It has been posted on this forum alone many time of not staying in the tank.

Here are a couple of photos from a couple of bikes that have come through the door. This stuff made it all the way to the carbs.

This bike had is stopped at the filter I took apart.

We used this product on the last tank we removed old kreem, cleaned and sealed: http://www.por15.com/POR-15-Motorcycle-Fuel-Tank-Strip-Repair-Kit_p_60.html

I will say it honestly took us three days to do the job properly it is not a process you can rush when you do it properly. It was a lot of work, but so far so good.

Hi Racerrad8,

Thanks so much for the info. I appreciate it! Looks like a feasible solution.
I have to pick up the tank and see how bad the internal rust is.
I'll report back!

Just rebuilding my FJ1200 which had been sat for 7 years. The fuel in the tank was like varnish and when emptied the inside of the take was very rusty. A friend of mine introduced me to the white vinegar method of removing rust, It is on you tube as well if you want to look it up.
Basically you buy 10 litres of white malt vinegar from a local store. Comes in 5 litre plastic containers. The vinegar is acidic varying from 5 to 12%. Pour the vinegar into the tank, top it up with water and leave it a couple of days. Empty the vinegar out in to a container and watch the rust pour out with it. I then took a jet washer and sprayed the inside of the tank out as best I could. Finally you dry the inside of the tank out with a hair dryer.
My tank now looks like new on the inside. Word of caution though the vinegar is acidic and does take off all the rust back to fresh metal but depending on how much rust you have depends on whether you burn a hole in the tank as you remove the thick covering of rust. I sprung a hole and had to have it brazed to repair the hole. No problem with heating the tank though during brazing as the vinegar has got rid of all the old petrol and fumes.
