I'm lazy when it comes to oil, how about you?

Randy suggested an oil thread...

Ok..

I run Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic in my FZ1, FJ1200 and my pickup.  The 944 gets 20w50 dyno oil.

Pickup has been on synthetic oil for over 100,000 miles and doesn't use a drop between changes.  Bikes don't seem to care one bit.  No clutch slippage, etc.

944 is driven about 3,000-4,000 miles a year and seems to like the thicker oil.  Helps keep the lifters quiet.  Plus it's nice to see the oil pressure gauge at 5bar when driving and 2bar at a hot idle.

So..yeah.. I'm lazy and don't want to have to buy a different oil for each bike/vehicle so I see no issues sticking with one between most all of them.

I run a Mobil synthetic in all my vehicles. A synthetic oil has much better properties than a petroleum based oil. However the single most important aspect of lubricating a motor is keeping the oil clean. No matter what oil you use it is going to get dirty long before it wears out. So using one type or brand of oil is not nearly as important as changing it frequently.

I'm tempted to ask Copper to provide detailed info on what oil, tires, and chain/sprocket sets he is using to make his FJ so much cheaper than mine.

Bill, since you asked http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/Motor-Oil-Specials.oap?icid=topFeaturedItemsWk39BHs4V1D10122016 I change it every 5000. WHen it goes on sale, like right now I by $100.00 worth and use it throughout the year. I run 10-30 in the winter and 20-50 in summer. As far as the chain is concerned, I use the old oil after I strain and let settle for chain lube. I use the DID XVZ (or something like that) chain. I get my sprockets from RPM and the front sprockets are only $15.00 compared to the other brand sprockets at $25.00+.

Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic in the diesel truck.

Dello Diesel oil 15-40 in the bike. The bike is only used for recreation, I don't put enough miles on it to justify anything else.

Mobile 1 for the wife's car.

Down South I have an old Saturn that use's about 1 qt every 2 or 3 tank fulls :). It gets what ever is handy..... Recently picked up 6 qts of misc oil in a yard sale for 1.00.  Guess where it is going...

I'll play in this thread since I have just enough sense to stay out of the Trump/Clinton thread. Rotella T3 in the FJ, Pennzoil Platinum in the wife's Dodge Charger and whatever is the cheapest oil on sale for son's 250,000 mile 4Runner. Just did an oil change and installed the RPM oil cooler just this evening. Got to get ready to run through the hills this weekend with a bunch of guys from the FZ1oa.com forum. I don't think many of them are bringing a FZ1 though.

OK I'm game. Rotella t6 in bikes,(fjs the chopper doesn't like synthetic) t6 in the f250, t6 In the smart, Lawn mower gets whatever, Raptor 700 gets Penn? (The guy gave me a case of it with the Raptor) so I guess I'm lazy too. T6 is so cheap for a full synthetic.

I have used a premium brand for years in all of my vehicles. Currently in my GMC Yukon XL is Royal Purple 5w30 full synthetic with 240,000 miles. It does not burn a drop. In the '89 FJ1300, I have used Royal Purple Max Cycle 20w50 before the 1300cc build. It currently has the Max Cycle 10w40. In the '90 FJ1200, it currently has Rotella T 15w40 and does burn a bit....and smokes a bit. I knew about this when I made the purchase. This is what was in it from the recent purchase.

Never a truer word was spoken!

The thing I never understand is by what criteria does an end user determine their choice of oil to be the best. Wet clutch issues aside, any modern engine treated right with any crappy oil will do 100's of 1000's of miles without a problem.

The effect oil choice will have on an engine is insignificant compared to how the engine is treated.

Well, it's clear that I have no fucking sense at all, so... I run the Rotella Heavy Duty Diesel motor oil in the race car, and Motul 10-40 synth from RPM in the bike. So there.

I ran mobile 1 fully synthetic since November last year. I recently switched to rotella.benefits.are exactly the same.a bit more engine noise from rotella however I'm not adding oil ever 500 miles now.
