For anyone looking for a USB power source with more versatile mounting options (other than the traditional barrel type) I bought one of these today.
It has a WP connector, WP inline fuse, WP cap, eyes, mounting tabs and a low profile.

What is the AMP output rated at?
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Exactly! I bought a 'good' one to charge my smartphone before I took my long trip out and back to the Central Rally in Colorado this year. It didn't even put out enough juice to keep the phone charged. What a waste. I contacted the manufacturer about it while on the road. Was told: yea, it won't keep up with with some of the newer smartphones (mine was three years old too). I told them, that that would've been useful knowledge to have known before I bought and installed it. They never replied back.

2.1 amps.

All the two outlet ones have a 2.1A and a 1.0A outlet, are you sure you had it in the right one? If so, there was something wrong, that should be plenty to keep it charged. Even if you are using it for navigation it should still charge, although not quite as fast.

The one that I bought is a single outlet type. I assume that it's putting out 1A. I can only relate my experiences of lack of charge level while on my trip. I now have a new smartphone, but haven't tried charging it in the bike yet, but can assume that I'll have the same experience with charging it too.

My first HTC Desire phone would die out in a few hours if playing music even while connected to a 1A charger, which was the standard 5 years ago and served most other types of phones just fine.

I don't believe the ratings printed on those little chargers until I've had time to use them. I'll be hooking up a voltmeter/ammeter gauge when I decide on a location and this might be a good circuit to place it in.
The ones like the OP posted are sturdy construction. I had one on my FJ for a while, screwed to the edge of the instrument fairing underneath the tach and it didn't stick out like a sore thumb either.

I had a HTC one that when used on the bike for GPS would over heat and stop charging. The out put of the USB socket was not the issue. My Samsung note now does GPS music with ease even on a 1 amp outlet.

As far as amps out go with 2 outlet ones usually they are rated at 2.1 for only 1 appliance plugged in but when 2 appliances both outlets are then only puuting 1amp each, as I said Usually.
Car double ones are the same 2.1 for 1 outlet but if you use both outlets it's only 1 amp out for each.
That's what you need to check, otherwise if you get a double 1 amp that Usually means 0.5 amp out for when both are being used.

Thanks Alan, that's handy to know about the output. It is a single plug.
I bought it to permanently power my GPS/HUD speedo so it probably wouldn't matter in this case but good to know for the twin outlet one I have for charging accessories.

This unit will charge equipment quickly But the next slow point is the LEAD,
Not all leads are the same! The lead that came with your device should be ok
When you buy a non branded lead they could be made with smaller gauge cabling which won't supply your device with enough amps thus resulting in slow charge rate.
A 28/24 gauge lead is what you need.
Lead length will affect charging also.

The lead wires to the battery are from my battery tender (18 gauge i think). Then I used this to add the accessory outlet. http://www.batterytender.com/Accessories/Female-Cigarette-Adaptor.html The USB adapter plugs into the socket. So the unit is not weather proof. But it can be covered and sealed to protect it if you plan to ford rivers deeper than your battery box. I installed a similar unit like Nole's but my Samsung S5 would slowly discharge playing music (Blue Tooth) and using GPS for my navigation. Now I have a spare socket for my GPS speedo.

This is a two outlet 4.2 amp total but it is cigarette lighter size and cost $20.00

I put one of these inside the lid my topbox at the top and wired it to the battery with an in line fuse. I put joiners in the wiring on the outside of the topbox so if I take it off it unplugs.  Ones a cigarette type, the other 2 are USB. It has an inbuilt light so I know when it's powered on. Both  the GPS and topbox power supplies have an on/off toggle switches  under the topbox rack hidden away so I power up from them. . Everything turns on and off by them. That way I know I won't get any surprises ( flat battery) The only problem is the USB only powers the GPS and won't allow it to be used. So USB powers the iPhone and iPod. I have a Bluetooth headset which works perfectly with the phone in the topbox. I have controls on the grips for the phone. The GPS I wired a second cigarette lighter adapter under the seat and using the cigarette lighter style cable it came with and ran it up to the dash.  It just reaches with about an inch to spare.
