Avon Storm Issue

The rear tire that arrived with my FJ was an Avon Storm 3D, manufactured in 2014. Bought the bike in 2015.
It worked fine for the first 4000 miles that I used it.  Then I noticed a shake, or wobble at low speeds, like when coming to a stop.
The problem progressively got worse.  Chasing this issue allowed me to improve the front end, which is now quite a bonus.
The carcass of the rear tire had deformed to where you could see a runout of  3/8" in the tread side to side.  Not fun to ride.
I replaced the tire with a different brand and she runs like she should now.
Very disappointed, since it was an expensive radial, and was hardly worn at all.
Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Hey Mike, thanks for the heads up.

I put one of those tires on Jason Lawson's '93 FJ and it should be about the same mileage as you have (4k) by now.

I'll have Jason check it out. This is the first I've heard of a premature belt failure in the Avon Storm 3D radials. I was very impressed with this tire.

Every manufacturer will have some defects get past the quality efforts. But it would be good to know if this is a trend or possibly a bad batch to avoid. Contact Avon or an Avon dealer. If the tread life is still looks good then they might offer a replacement even though you did not buy it.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

It is a good tire, I put a Battlax on this time.  Still a little gun shy about the Avon.
I will contact Avon and report on their response to the forum.
Thanks, guys

I'd consider at least mentioning this to an Avon dealer.

Avon offer road hazard on their tires, IIRC... you never know, they just might help you out a bit.

Ok, definitely a separation of at least the inner ply.
Check out photo.  This is what happens as you push down and roll the tire.
Sent a pleasant note to Avon yesterday, I think this is unacceptable and I will pursue this issue with them.
The Battlax works fine, but once you ride a radial, you become spoiled.

Avon contacted me today, the tire is covered with their standard warranty.
I will be issued a "credit".  Will post what that means when all the hoops are cleared.
I must give a shout out to Mark, aka Fjmonkey, for reminding me of my rights as a consumer. :good2:
