I'm trying figure out how to mount my storage bag on the back of the bike. I like to keep the rear turn lights.
I was thinking about buying a extra set of grab rails and drill 2 holes in each 1 using a 1/4" sheet of aluminum about 13" wide by 8" deep for the top.
"O" and trying to mount it about 2" up over the back fairing.  Or if  any 1 here have any better thoughts on this.

You can get a ready made Renntec rack from RPM. www.rpmracingca.com

The first photo is of the Renntec

Or you can go with the Hepco & Becker full rack that you can attach saddlebags. www.motomachines.com

My turn lights stick out on the sides. Those may not fit.

The OEM turn signals get relocated to the rack, behind the saddlebags.

What does your storage bag look like that you want to mount back there ? I'd start with it's requirements for a secure mount and then work around keeping my turn signals intact as you said you'd like to do.

I'd say you could fabricate  an aluminum bracket just as you had planned. I'm assuming you want the bag to be on the bike side to side( opens on each side)  If I was making it , I'd fab the bracket then debur it really well with a wire wheel then I would coat it in plastic dip and allow it to set for a few days. The plastic coating will help keep it from destroying the original finish of the bike. As you said you could get an extra set of hand grabs and drill them then bolt it on or you could probably strap it on or use heavy duty zip ties, lots of options.

Bags like this would probably just strap on with no fabrication needed.  Of course this is just an example, I'm sure there other options. http://www.ebay.com/itm/131816685073

The real question is do you want a rack or do you just want something to put some gear in? Does it need to be secured like a lockable trunk or is it okay if you can just pop it off and take it with you? Those lights are gorgeous, but they are going to interfere with most every rack on the market. So you'd have to come up with a custom one.

The other thing I see is you have a roll bag. Those are generally made to attach to uprights like sissybars, backrests, or fork tubes. Two of which you don't have and the other isn't really an option. If you don't want to go through the rigmarole of making a custom rack try looking for a tailbag or a tankbag.

I've been using this one all season: https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Accessories-73727-MotoGear-Motorcycle/dp/B000RN04VU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471113646&sr=8-1&keywords=motorcycle+tailbag

It clips on with straps I run under the seat in the front and through the grab handles in the back. It's a nice size, comes with a built in rain cover, and has zipper pockets on both sides... enough space for my lunch, a thermos or a water bottle, a few misc items, maybe the quilted liner from my jacket and my additional tools. It fits on the passenger seat and hangs over the tail 4 or 5 inches. I cut some vinyl and placed it in the tail to protect the finish just in case, but it works fine with no issues. It's not perfect, but it does the job pretty well for what it cost.

There are probably many variations of bags that can all fit in that space. One thing I was thinking about while looking at those custom signals, is that on my bike, I have my saddle bags butt right in front of the stock signals, I actually use the signals as the rear mounts for my saddle bags. So what I'm saying is the signals you have clean up the rear lines of the bike but also take away a mount point option. In all honesty my main go to bag is my tank bag, I use it so much that I'm about to replace it with something more durable and user friendly.

wow thanks for all the info...  I may try the extra set of guard rails, if can find them.  My wife thought i should just trap bag to the rails and let it rest on the back of the fairing. But i do not like anything rubbing on the paint.

If you don't use the rear bags much then you could use this stuff. http://www.americanfloormats.com/carpet-protection-film/?gclid=CLTB86-Wwc4CFYc6gQodkSwCMQ

It will provide a layer of protection, then use a second layer of micro fiber cloth and your paint will be well protected. When your trip is done you can peel it off.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

thanks for the info...

I know there is another product that is much thicker with a mild adhesive. A little searching should turn up more options than you need.

Oh yea, the 3M stuff posted here. http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=14989.0
