That's why I contribute, this shit isn't free. I was floored to read for fjmonkey that there are only 211 contributors out of the close to 5000 members. My math isn't very good but that would about 2 or 3% support this website I doubt any member could ever be considered a profit center.

Exactly... it's definitely not free.   :pardon:

Speaking strictly as a member, I think it was a bit short sighted of Bill (the fan) to take that point of view.  His posts are always of value, and he'll be missed.

Just for clarification the number of contributing members at 211 are based on contributors since last March or May (I remember the month started with an "M"). The way it was originally set up, a member could contribute $1 and get "Contributor" status indefinitely.

Due to the recent number of page hits, Randy has had to upgrade the hosting package and now pays 33% more to keep this forum up and running. Remember when it was down a little while ago? That was due to this site exceeding the allowable traffic.  So Randy is not trying to make a profit from contributions, he just does not want to loose money to keep it going.

It is unfortunate if we loose members because the "free" part includes adds. However it is still free. If you don't want to see the adds or feel that a small amount every year is a good return for the value you get every time you log in, then contribute what is comfortable for you. If you don't want to remember to contribute every year then set up an annual contribution. There is no pressure here, chose what works for you and stick around the digital FJ campfire. S'mores or red cap anyone? Where did that potato cannon go? I want to see if will launch a Thermite ball.

I think everyone is jumping the gun a ltttle here. I wes on the site the other day and noticed some advertising that Randy would NOT ENDORSE. I believe that is what "the fan" is referring to. Not regular advertising. Somehow , someone placed ads. I don't want to pick sides or cause a fight but .... I think "the fan" is referring to the same things  I saw. Not the regular RPM adverts.

The contributor status will only allow the RPM banner add the top. If you do not have contributor status then other adds (RPM or other) may appear in posts.

Are you seeing adds other than the RPM banner at the top? If so then please post a screen shot. As a contributing member you should not see any other adds.

Thank you for your effort in helping sort this out. All efforts and help from members will improve this forum.  Things are a bit new and getting things back on center takes some time.

Since this thread started, I have not seen any second party adds when browsing posts whether I am logged on or not.

So... in essence we are no longer members... we are profit centers.

Good Bye.

A bit sensitive?

It would seem as if the "ad has hit the fan"

I too, see random ads among posts when I'm not logged in...but I can't imagine they are bothersome to most.  I think there was a thread on this a while back and when reading this forum on some particular device or in some particular way, the ads took over the screen?  I dunno...I've never seen it.   :unknown:

When I'm logged in, I just get the RPM banner ad.  When I was very new here, people would often reply with, "just call Randy"...Ummm...After a while you figure out who Randy is...and why he's the go-to guy for a lot of our FJ needs...but in the beginning, I had no idea how to find him.  For that reason and to my way of thinking, the banner ad is most appropriate here.

Which is why, for the longest time, I quit signing my posts.

I have not seen the adds but, I always log on with my laptop, so this always has me signed in.

Randy bought the site from Marsh. We all need to be thankful to Marsh for starting this site and to Randy for keeping it going!!! This site could have been shut down and we would see nothing. It's better to put up with a few ads, than to have no forum at all.

I want to thank Randy for keeping the forum up and running and if some changes need to be made, so be it.

You may feel differently. This is the way I see it.

Interesting - this I never knew.

Now there are 212 contributors... money order is on its' way.

Thanks to RPM & the site moderators.

Just be aware that the default "Options" in the contribution area at the bottom of the page is set to "Every Year." If you don't change it to "One Time" it sets up a recurring debit on your card or paypal.
That's fine if that's what you want to do but if you want to make a one off contribution, you need to change it.
