1990 handlebar - what is missing???

So, have this 1990 fj1200 that I am putting back together.  Almost done although need to re-attach the "caps" on the end of the handlebars.  Issue is that I seem to be missing a piece (or two - one on each side)...

I have the "caps" and the long screws that could hold them in although the opening in the handlebar is way too big (as my photo shows... hopefully).  Thus, I think I am missing some sort of "screw in adapter" that the exploded parts diagrams are not showing (btw, PO had the bars painted and, I suspect, removed and lost them).

So, any pictures, part numbers or indications of what I am missing is appreciated.

thank you

One day I'm gonna get a set of those vibranator bar end weights. My right hand is tired of going to sleep.

Zoomjay,

The stock bar end weights and the Vibranators simply screw into the ends of the stock handlebars.  They are one-piece units, not an assembly that bolts together. The Parts fiche shows that the correct bar ends are threaded.  No parts are missing, unless you have a non-stock handlebar assembly, or bar end weights that are made for another bike.

I have Vibrantors on my FJ1100, and they do help to reduce vibrations in the handlebars.  I also used foam grips, for more comfort.

attached is a picture of what I Have....  from the posts thus far it looks like all that I Have is aftermarket parts and none will work.  Is this correct?

Zoomjay,

Those are aftermarket parts, no doubt, but I can't say if there is any way to make them work for you.  Anybody here who now has Vibranators might have a pair of OEM bar ends lying around.  My old OEM units are hiding from me at the moment, otherwise I'd  make you a deal.  Post a message in the "Parts Wanted" forum on this web site, and maybe somebody can provide what you need there.  New, the bar ends cost ~US$50.00 a pair, and Vibranators cost over US$100.00 a pair.  You might want to skip a few steps, and go for the new Vibranators.  You should ask for either type, in your want ad.

You definitely need heavy steel weights on those bar ends, if not that Yamaha is gonna shake your hands from your arms in the first 15 minutes.

Those are aftermarket "slider" bar ends. They are missing the expansion plugs that keep them in.

You could probably improvise the expansion plugs from some hardware store items. They will get he bar ends on.

I would advise against that. I have ridden an FJ with lightweight bar ends. It is rather unpleasant, as vibration is much worse than with even the stock bar end weights.

You can find used stock bar ends on eBay - they were common to several Yamaha models. Or, someone around here might have some spares.

Do you really have that bad vibrations on your FJ's?

I used to have, but after doing a thorough service with valves, carbs, sync, fixing diaphragm holes, replacing two engine rubber mounts, re-torquing engine mounts, etc.., I have basically no vibrations at all.

I would suggest to try and find the source of the vibrations.

Zoomjay,

This is the Parts Fiche for your bike.

http://www.2wheelpros.com/oem-parts/1990-yamaha-fj1200a.html

Find the drawing "Handlebar-Cable" and find Index #14.  Find that number in the list, and click on the NAME of the part.  When you see that part number listing with the OEM price, scroll down to see what other vehicles also use that same part.  There are dozens of possible "donors."  Search eBay or Google for that part number.  Any vehicle on the donor list can give you the correct part.

I dont feel any vibration in my left hand with stock bar ends, but my right hand gets the tingle fairly often. Maybe that's why RPM came up with the vibranators, to fine tune it out from one side to the other all together?  I mean Yamaha put the bar weights on there for a reason. I'm sure when they designed the FJ  bar ends they didn't start with some ol worn out test unit that needed engine mounts and the carbs checked for holes in the diaphragms.

I'm not saying it's unrideable, but comparing bar ends to no bar ends, no bar ends is more unpleasant.

Also - early FJ does not have rubber mounts for the engine. It's solid mounted to the frame.

No, my bar ends are not stock but similar in design/weight (custom made in stainless steel).

All FJ's - including the FJ1100 - have rubber mounted engines. The FJ1100 has 5 rubber mounts and 2 solid mounts.

Well, if you take them off, you'll know what I mean.

My first FJ came with crappy lightweight bar end mirrors. When I tossed them and put on stock bar ends, things were noticeably better.

Sure, the bar ends reduces vibrations, just like correct adjusted valves, synced carbs, good condition engine mounts, etc...

What I am saying is that if you have excessive vibrations (which it sounds like some of you have), you should find the source and fix it. The bar ends will then eliminate the little inherent vibrations left.
