I've seen that helmet picture floating around, but I haven't been able to find a source for it! I'd like to know the story - crash? Test? Sawed off? My wife has the exact same helmet.

It's a hoax.
It was made by a belt sander or table sander.
The sanding is much too smooth to be asphalt abrasion. The head (when attached to the body) does not slide in that position when in contact with the road. The head does not stay in one position while sliding.

However.....It does get the point across. A good visual :good:

Noooo, how could that possibly be, it was on the NET!

Pat, a freak accident could see a riders head wedged is his own vehicle or another's in such a way to cause and abrasion like that but the giveaway, as you say, (as well as the likelihood) is the smoothness of the edges.

This apparently hasn't stopped it doing the rounds though with many (different) people claiming first hand knowledge of the rider and the accident, even though the details keep changing.

But as you say, it's a good visual reminder of what can happen (does anyone still need convincing of this?)
I always imagine helmetless riding these days is only for Harleys and the movies.

I had a guy in my motorcycle ed class who insisted that helmets were more dangerous. His dad had taught him that

His father was obviously thick skulled, but I doubt thick enough to survive this:

Good point about items falling from vehicles. I've seen too much junk on the road and witnessed a lot actually coming off.

It is very much a part of my "survival skills package" to not travel behind any vehicle carrying anything that could bounce/fall off.

This could have been from some open-top, or open-wheel race car that got upside down and skidded a ways down the track?
Not much you can do with your head if you're pinned under it.
