Winter is Coming.................

Time to fix up the cylinder head and do all those other mods and fixes I have been thinking about.

So last weekend i relegated the race bikes to the corner of the shed and loaded the FJ onto the bike bench.
(Note: - must replace the hydraulic fluid in the pump as the bench was struggling to raise the beast !)

So first up a quick inspection to see what was missing, broken, damaged etc. Fortunately the list was blank. :good2:

Next plan was remove seat, side panels & tail unit but first the Givi rack had to come off, which meant the rear indicators had to be unbolted too.

I had obtained an after market GRP hugger for a Thunderace from Poland, which should bolt straight onto the Thunderace Swing arm. This required the alloy chain guard to be removed, which required the silencer to come off too. And the rear brake pipe clamps. But having done that it dropped straight in.

I like that hugger, very clean lines.  :good2:
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

'86 Ambulance - Bent frame, cracked case, due for an overhaul
'89 Stormy Blue - Suits my Dark Side

Disconnect your shock, now move that swing arm up, you will find that the left front side of the hugger contacts your subframe tube.

You will have to a little surgery on the hugger for clearance:

Marc Rittner talks about it here (scroll down) http://www.fjmods.co.uk/MarcRittner.htm

Cheers!

I gotta wait till "her that must f#ck off outa the way" has booked a girls weekend somewhere..........

but yes, its a definite sometime soon.

First I got to figure out if I need to drop the motor to remove the cylinder head, then post it down to VIC before I fly out next week.
Still thinking of something..................

FJools

I'd like to thank everyone for their assistance in my cylinder head removal thread. I don't know what I was worried about  :dash2:

here are a few photos from the session.

All went without a hitch really as I took my time.

The only thing I found was some damage to the ignition cover from when some clown knocked my bike over earlier this year.

They didn't even have the courtesy to leave a note. How they managed to pick up an FJ with its steering lock on makes me think I was better off not confronting the Gorilla

Troyskie

Looks like you & I are at about the same stage mate.

I'm waiting on some parts & then the head goes away for the valves to be seated and the barrels off to be made ready for the new pistons.

What size are you going to go to?

Staying as is Troy, just a light hone and re install the same pistons, may be worth doing the rings I don't know yet.

I wasnt originally going to disturb the block but I have a new cam chain I picked up a while back so it would probably pay to fit it while I'm in there which will mean splitting the cases. probably the tensioner pad and slippers while I'm at it. If you are totally controlled you could spend a lot of money...............

While we are on the subject of spend - I also noticved Nova do some tasty gearbox internals............

but I think this is out of my budget

Wow Jools! A 6 speed box for the FJ!! :yahoo:

I'm going to keep this in mind if I ever need to split the cases!!!!!

I think that is out of everyone's budget...

$4000+ USD

Interesting, but price is shocking.

Holy cow! I must have looked before my first  :morning2:.
I thought it was £275, not £2750!

One long bottomless one eh Troy ?

Yes, nice but I could not justify the extra cog, plus being close ratio wouldn't really suit road use as such.
And that is about A$5000
These are the gearboxes developed for the Island Classic Team GB. Probably trying to recoup tooling costs.

But when you think about it, what would a brand new Yamaha box cost..........?? I would settle for std ratios with a 6th gear that is maybe 5% or so up on 5th.

(I was looking if they did clutch centre bosses for my TZ250 v Twin when I came across them.)
