Horrid mileage or normal?

Just put my first tank of gas through the FJ and of course set the trip to a whopping 68.8 miles and refilled 4.2 gallons of gas for an exciting 16mpgs. Now I know this is twice the engine as my Versys but I don't feel half the gas mileage is right is it?

Something is wildly amiss there.  Talking it easy, touring, fully loaded up...I'm in the mid-40 MPG range.  Riding at "Rally speeds", I will drop into the mid-30 MPG range.  16 MPG??!!

That is about all I could add or fix. I also getting 40 average (actual) un-corrected because the ODO is off slightly then 45MPG.

4.2 gallons was measured from the pump. I don't see any indications of a fuel leak or even fuel smell. And exhaust seems normal. It's very odd.

You say the amount of fuel was correct because it came straight out of the bowser, no doubt, but mpg is calculated on fuel used, not fuel replaced, you make no mention of how full the tank was to start with.

Recheck it making sure your tank is full before you start. If it's still lousy, then start investigating further.
Eliminate the obvious and easy stuff first.

What an obvious answer lol. I filled it at a particularly low level but not quite dead empty and refilled around the same. I'll see on this upcoming tank and then get back. And I'll calculate the mileage with my phones gps as well.

Mine burns 6.5 litres/100 km. I'm in no mood to convert this to MPG, sorry. Riding it hard, above 180 kph, fuel consumption rises to maximum 7.5 litres/100 km, two up and a lot of stuff on the bike.

Hi! 16mpg that is bad.
I just tuned up a 89 yamaha FJ 1200 I bought it this week. 50k miles on bike
I made sure it was tuned well and I mean the hole bike went for a 240 mile ride my mileage
corrected was 45 mpg all stock except for slipons on exhaust and that was in the cascade mountain range
here in Oregon speed was up and down 30-75 mostly I was driving as I always do on a good bike I wasent
hamering it just haveing fun. are you sure its running on all cylinders ? these bikes make good gas mileage
if every thing is right.  Brakes not draging, valves set right ?, tires with low air pressure, drive chain no good.
carbs messed up, what condition the bike is really in ? etc, etc,

Using the GPS for mileage I get 45-49 mpg on 150 -250 mile trips.

Looks like it was some fluke I'm not even half way through my second tank and at almost 60 now. We'll see what it ends up being.
