There is about a 100% chance it is clutch related (or you're riding in bare feet)

Check your fluid level.
Check the slave cylinder for external leaks.
Does the clutch lever feel normal in operation.
Bleed the clutch anyway, just to make sure, it's easy.

If all of these are in order, we can look further but check the obvious first and report back.

Unless your fluid resevoir is very full, an FJ on the side stand on full left lock can introduce air into the system if the clutch lever is pumped.

I agree with Noel - check the obvious things first. If that doesn't solve the problem, another thing to check is the shifter shaft. I had a similar problem about 5 years ago and it turned out to be due to the spring mechanism on the shifter shaft.

Here are a couple pictures of the culprit to my shifting woes:

It was the small spring on the left side of the photo below:

First do what ribbert (Noel) recommended. The FJ clutch slave is a known weak link and common issue. My '86 developed a clutch problem exactly as you describe. It slowly got worse. I bled the clutch all was good again. Then I ordered a rebuild kit for the slave and master from RPM and did them both at the same time while I had the system opened up.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.
