For years I poo poo'ed grip heaters. I can be such a stubborn knuckle head. Grip heaters rock.

I replaced mine last year and I'm pretty sure the stock flasher is a 3 pin, so you need a 3 pin electronic one. This is the one that I used and it works great: http://www.amazon.com/3-Pin-CF-13-Electronic-Flasher-Signal/dp/B008C9YJ6C?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00

Watch out for some of the cheaper ones, they slow down the flash rate but not nearly enough.

They are universal. They don't use load resistance to flash. Therefore you don't need resistors.

A note on the LED flasher relay. On the 1989 models, the OEM flasher unit has 5 pins. I can't vouch for how many pins the '84-'87 models have.

On the 84/85 FJ the the flasher relay does multiple jobs coil power, start relay, turn signal cancel(reed relay) and flasher. I assume the RPM LED tail light came with resisters installed because it worked with no wiring changes.
