Slowly but surely I'm getting the kinks worked out of this bike that day for six years. I couldn't best the deal. I basically traded my'84 for this'91. It's got half the miles and it's appearance is still pretty nice. Their was 6 yrs past registration I was gonna have to pay on it which totaled $675. Luckily, the bike just came to its 25th anniversary which qualified it as a historical vehicle which I said I used for historical preservation and hobby purposes. Wiped all the fees out. Score!

So to my question.. My heat shield is missing and was wondering if that posses and serious safety issues or mechanical issues. I plan on getting one but until then..

I can not quote any hard data, but I have read a comment or two about the need for the heat shield. From what I can gather is the purpose is to keep the temps down a bit for the carbs.

I can imagine keeping the fuel cooler (more dense) allows for better combustion.

Yea, I was wondering about vapor lock. I suppose it was put on for a purpose so I'll get one.
