KISS principle

I haven`t posted here in a while but I figure it`s time. I had an `88 FJ but I sold it to a friend who is on here, Db Cooper. I have several bikes including a 2007 Tuono. Now here`s the thing, the Tuono got me thinking. It`s got a canbus electrical system which means the ECU monitors and controls most everything. You push the start button, you`re not closing the start relay, you`re making a request to the ECU, which them looks at the system, makes sure everything is where it`s supposed to be, them sends power to the start relay.  I started wondering, if some little gremlin got into the system, I could be stuck absolutely anywhere with a dead bike with no way of diagnosing what the hell went wrong as you need an Axone reader to get into the diagnostics.
  Now we have ABS, TCS, different modes for different condition, and KTM has just figured out how to make ABS work while leaned over! I hear of new Ducatis being in the shop for electrical issues which prevent the bikes from running at all and trained techs with the proper diagnostic equipment and training haven`t got a clue.

Makes me want to start hunting for a `91 and up FJ1200. Minimal electronics, stone simple, comfortable, Hell I rode mine from Ontario to Texas in two days! If I want to adjust the valves, I can almost do it right before I go for a ride. A couple of suspension upgrades and it`ll handle better than I can ride.

Your rant immediately made me think of a little ride I went on in 2013. On day 3 of our 30 day ride from Ontario to Alaska (and back) my buddy Bruce's 2008 Moto Guzzi Stelvio died due to an ECU fault. Long story short - he was out of the trip. A few days later the fuel pump on my 1992 FJ died. A little roadside MacGyvering and I was able to bypass the fuel pump and continue riding for 2 more days before I installed a replacement fuel pump.

The new bikes (and cars, for that matter) are great with their electronic controls but if something fails you're not likely going to be able to fix it on the side of the road. It is what it is, I suppose.
