After watching the movie trailer I think this record could be easily broken by someone riding a more reliable bike---Yamaha FJR with a car tire on the rear. This is what alot the IronButt riders are using with better success. A remarkable feat non the less.  Dave

Yeah, my initial thought was: "Did he start out with a new set of tires?"

You'd think that distance (2,800 miles?) could be easily covered by modern sport-touring tires, even slabbing it the whole way?

 I dont get this, so is the goal to not obey the long arm of the law to the best of ones ability in order to shave off time and not get caught and try to ride as fast as possible. I remember the movies like Cannonball Run and Gumball Rally. What are the rules? Is there any? The non aggressive riders that tow the line of the law must hate these record breakers! A group of riders last summer here came in for fuel and one of the guys was riding the BMW 6 cyl, I asked how the big 6 was like on fuel and they all said it was the best out of all the bikes including a 650 Vstrom, very hard to believe but they all said it was true. I told the guy it was a nice bike but I was not willing to remortgage my house for it.

I've eeked 12,000 miles out of a rear Metzeler ME880...Fully loaded for touring.  With a little forethought, 2,800 miles could have been easily handled by a number of tire choices.  Add to that a spare fuel tank setup ala Midget Mike and Bob's your uncle! 

That being said, fuel, bike and tire endurance aren't the prevailing factors here...fatigue is.  Riding faster will increase miles while reducing time in the saddle, but at speed...that increased sensory input per hour will wear you out.  A balancing game to be sure and averaging somewhere in the realm of 72MPH for nearly 39 hours isn't something I'd ever look to take on.
